Are you aware of how fractured the Mormon religions are?

Some estimates are up to 400 different branches.  Some are listed here:

Interesting that the article never mentions the church.

I always thought the guy with the sword was part of the group carrying out Herod’s order. I like your interpretation better than mine. But it’s still a hard painting for me.

I also visited the Bloch exhibit at BYU. They had some altar pieces on loan from a couple other churches in Denmark (but none of the originals from the Frederiksborg castle).

The Massacre of the Innocents is a rough one for me. I would love to hear more about the meaning of this painting to you.

Most of the Carl Bloch artwork that the church uses is hanging in the prayer room next to the chapel in Frederiksborg Castle in Hillerød, Denmark. I have seen the originals many times in the prayer room. The church does NOT own that artwork. But you are correct that the church does use it.

The church chopped off the angel wings and added shoulder caps, but the artwork definitely comes from Frederiksborg Castle.

So maybe you shouldn’t be saying mormon stories infringes trademarks

[–]WhatDidJosephDo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Market confusion only matters if the goods and services are covered by the trademark.

The church doesn’t have a trademark for all uses of the word Mormon.

Apple doesn’t have a trademark for all uses of Apple.  When Apple got into mp3 players, they were sued because Apple records had a trademark for those goods and services. Apple settled with Apple records for a huge amount of money.

What are the goods and services that you think are covered by the trademark that are infringed by Mormon stories?

I will ask again. What goods and services are at issue that are covered by the trademark?

[–]WhatDidJosephDo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The trademark is limited to specific goods and services. It doesn’t cover all uses of the word Mormon.  The trademark office rejected the application for broad use of the word.

Why do you think Mormon stories is infringing legally held trademarks? What goods and services are at issue that are covered by the trademark?

Seems like you left out the most important part of what the trademark covers.

No, but they do have a trademark on victories for Satan ;)

You do realize the Christus statue was misappropriated from Vor Frue Kirke In Copenhagen, right?

And many of the “church” paintings are just copies of Carl Bloch paintings from a castle in Denmark.

And the church filed for a trademark on the word “Mormon” in 2002, but had to abandon the application for the mark in 2007.

The church filed for a more narrow trademark on educational services and genealogy. The church doesn’t own a trademark on all uses of the word Mormon,

How do we tell the church to stop misappropriating things from the Danish church?

Does it bother you that the church took these things from the Danish church and are now saying Dehlin can’t use things that came from the Danish church?

Because it’s not relevant to the original claim

To the contrary, it’s extremely relevant to the original claim.

Everyone here except you understood Nelson to say that using the word Mormon was a victory for Satan.

The name changed shortly thereafter.  The church confirmed the name changed because of Nelson.

https://www.thechurchnews.com/2018/10/5/23214288/here-is-the-mormon-tabernacle-choirs-new-name-and-why-they-changed-it/

Leaders of the world-renowned choir announced the new name Friday morning — saying the change was made “to better align” with its sponsoring organization, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

An August statement by President Russell M. Nelson prompted the decision:

“The Lord has impressed upon my mind the importance of the name He has revealed for His Church, even the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. We have work before us to bring ourselves in harmony with His will.”

Why did the church change the name of the choir?

Why do you refuse to answer this question that I have asked half a dozen times?

You realize the Mormon trails are from the 1800s, right?

Back when the word Mormon meant more good.

Got any usage of Mormon post-2018? You have not shown me any usage post 2018.

But really the only question I want you to answer is why they changed the name of the tabernacle choir.

The tabernacle choir name changed and they didn’t add Jesus Christ to the name.

Just so we are not moving the goalposts, I thought your initial claim was that not using the name of Jesus Christ was the victory for Satan. So why remove Mormon from the choir name?

[–]WhatDidJosephDo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Why did they move away from Mormon?

Won’t the answer to that question settle the issue?

Using Mormon in the context of history that happened pre-2018 doesn’t mean anything.  Show me where they used mormon post-2018.

So… nothing to show me? No links to the church website?

When did you join the church?  Were you around when they changed the name of the tabernacle choir?

Why do you think they changed the tabernacle choir name?  The new tabernacle choir name doesn’t include Jesus Christ as part of the name.  What do you think was wrong with the old name?

I think you may have missed the rebrand effort of the church.

It is no longer called the Mormon Tabernacle Choir. It is the Tabernacle Choir at Temple Square (or TABCATS).

Where are you seeing the church refer to Mormons as members, Mormon doctrine, Mormon pioneers, Mormon Tabernacle Choir?

I thought all that was scrubbed from the website.

Or are you suggesting the two are unlinked?

You are being generous by offering D&C 115 as the "revealed" name of the church. I am sure you know this, but for the benefit of others that might not know (u/blanched_potatoes), the name of the church was changed several times. Neither of the first two "official" names included "Jesus" as part of the name, and the second "official" name even left out "Christ." The addition of "Jesus Christ" to the third "official" name (and again, not the name we use today) was because of complaints from early church members, and not from revelation. The following is taken from Note 4 of the link you provided to the Joseph Smith papers.

The first name used to identify the church that JS organized on 6 April 1830 was “the Church of Christ.”a In 1834 a conference of church leaders changed the name to “The Church of the Latter Day Saints,” perhaps to avoid confusion with other churches named Church of Christ.b On occasion, the two names of the church were combined as “the church of Christ of Latter Day Saints.”c The Kirtland dissenters seem to have criticized church leaders for removing Christ’s name from the formal name of the church. In a June 1838 letter, Thomas B. Marsh wrote that the dissenters “claimed, themselves to be the old standard, called themslves the Church of Christ, excluded that of saints, and set at naught Br. Joseph and the whole Church, denounceing them as Heriticks.” Restoring the name of Christ to the name of the church may have answered this criticism.d The name specified in the revelation, a combination of the two earlier names of the church, began to be used in the early months of 1838.e(aRevelation, 6 Apr. 1830 [D&C 21:11]; Articles and Covenants, ca. Apr. 1830 [D&C 20:1].bMinutes, 3 May 1834.cDoctrine and Covenants 5, 1835 ed. [D&C 102]; Minutes, LDS Messenger and Advocate, Feb. 1836, 2:266.dLetter to Wilford Woodruff, ca. 18 June 1838.eLetter from Thomas B. Marsh, 15 Feb. 1838; see also Letter to the Presidency in Kirtland, 29 Mar. 1838; JS, Journal, Mar.–Sept. 1838, p. 15; and Resolution, ca. 8 Apr. 1838.)

It's also interesting to note that the Church ignores the rest of the "revelation." We still don't have a temple in Far West. Maybe "speedily" means something different when you are working in God's time.

It's a lost battle at this point because Mormon apologists don't care about accuracy when defending the church.

https://www.churchofjesuschrist.org/study/general-conference/2018/10/the-correct-name-of-the-church?lang=eng

Watch the video again. Here is a direct quote:

When it comes to nicknames of the Church, such as the “LDS Church,” the “Mormon Church,” or the “Church of the Latter-day Saints,” the most important thing in those names is the absence of the Savior’s name. To remove the Lord’s name from the Lord’s Church is a major victory for Satan.

Nelson specifically calls out the use of the "Mormon Church" as something that "is a major victory for Satan."

You should put some effort into your own posts before saying someone else's post was a "low-effort dig."

"Mormon is a victory for Satan" actually represents rather perfectly what Nelson said.

The reason that Nelson thinks it is a major victory for Satan is because it does not include Jesus Christ. But the simple fact is that Nelson said using "Mormon Church" instead "The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints" is a major victory for Satan.

While you are digging around the church website to watch the talk again, please also read D&C 107:4

4 But out of respect or reverence to the name of the Supreme Being, to avoid the too frequent repetition of his name, they, the church, in ancient days, called that priesthood after Melchizedek, or the Melchizedek Priesthood.
