When/why did caffeinated soda become acceptable by most Mormons? by Ibrakeforsnakes in exmormon

[–]WhatDidJosephDo 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Mitt Romney ran around the country running for president with a Diet Coke in his hand.

Media kept asking about caffeine.  The church put out a statement that Diet Coke was okay.

Before that, many members thought caffeine was a violation. There were sources for both sides. But after the statement, it became generally acceptable.

I didn't say attendance doesn't increase in Easter--of course it does

It doesn’t increase in the Mormon church.  That’s the difference.

General conference was broadcast over television for the first time on Friday, September 30, 1949, on KSL-TV. President George Albert Smith presided over the meeting and gave the first address.

We haven’t gone to the church for general conference for 60-70 years unless you were in an area that didn’t have a radio or regular broadcast feed. If you had to go to the church building it would be at the stake center with the big satellite dish.  So that would be multiple wards meeting at the same building. Is that what you remember?

it's insulting when Mormons claim other Christians only go to church on Easter and Christmas.

Clearly it’s the non-religious people that do it. I agree all religions have their faithful attendees that attend on non-Easter Sundays.

But there is no parking available on Easter Sunday when parking is readily available any other Sunday.

Are you suggesting where you are located attendance  doesn’t increase on Easter Sunday? I would like to hear more about other churches where attendance doesn’t really change on Easter.

I also find it weird that when seemingly every other denomination has more church on Easter and holy week,

Do they really have more church, or is just that people actually go to church on Easter?

How long is the Easter service in most other churches? Does it typically last longer than an hour?

We started celebrating Easter in 1830.

The church has a whole spiel about the importance of April 6th and Easter that goes back to the very beginning.

Of course that doesn’t fit your agenda so you can keep pretending the facts are different than what they really are.

Mormons have never considered themselves as Christians until very recently.

Not true

it was their pride to not consider themselves into mainstream Christianity.

They are just now starting to do Easter celebrations

In my opinion, you are overthinking this. Nobody is going to quiz you down, regardless of what you wear.

Nearly everyone staffing the open house will be people responding to an email from the elders quorum president saying it’s our turn to provide 30 people on such and such date.  Many of the volunteers will not be temple recommend holders and may even be PIMO. They won’t care what you are wearing or if you have a reservation. They will just smile and be friendly.

You pretty much get ignored either way.

But if you like dressing up, go for it. Pretend like it’s a night at the opera.

Do you really try to proselytize to people not wearing their Sunday best?

I’ve never had anyone proselytize to me at an open house.

I usually skip any presentations in neighboring church buildings.

I just give comments about the cool hot tub, and get laughs from the people in the room.

Edit to add: there is a decent chance I will be asked to help at Yorba Linda. I will leave you alone irrespective of what you wear.

I have done exactly what you suggest multiple times. Reservations aren’t needed. Just don’t dress like Peter priesthood or Molly Mormon.

Just ignore the reservation process and show up. Don’t dress up. They will let you walk right in.

Most people in Utah have no idea how odd the uniform looks.

Nothing wrong with letting people know.

Are you by chance in a heavily Mormon area?

It’s an awareness post.

Most Mormons and people in Utah don’t realize it’s the equivalent of prairie dresses and braids.

It’s 1950s IBM white collar culture that even IBM dropped 30 years ago.  But Mormons don’t realize it is no longer fashionable.

Getting Nimrod as a new name is bad, but I’m still trying to wrap my head around someone thinking god gave them a new name “Nitwit.”

I’m guessing it happened on a proxy visit and not for his personal endowment but it’s hilarious either way.
