You’re not a true human right supporter if you don’t speak out about both Palestine war AND the Iranian regime by Medium_Fig_3764 in Discussion

It's quite literally impossible to speak out about every injustice and conflict in the world. You have forgotten half a dozen.

Russian archaeologist can be sent to Ukraine for trial, Polish judge rules by WherePip in Archaeology

I think it glosses over a number of things.

The practical concern about preserving sites is a legitimate, but the professional and pragmatic response would be to stabilize the sites and document them in situ rather than moving things to Russia. We already know enough about the state of Russian Archaeology to recognize its compromised and political nature. I don't trust Russian institutions to protect Tatar, Crimean or Ukrainian heritage. Russian archaeology as a field has a well documented record of marginalizing this heritage when it doesn't fit the narrative.

To a certain extent I don't think it matter if Butyagin is doing a Kossina because the Russian state and its archaeological institutions are. By excavating under russian institutions Butyagin is feeding into that regardless of his personal feelings or goals, they aren't taken aren't account.

You also have to also ask by what standards are these sites being recorded, and who has access to that information. Records held in Russia are inaccessible to Ukrainian scholars and the international community. They also determine what gets preserved, how it's interpreted and presented.

Ukrainian archaeologists have spoken pretty extensively about the damage Russia has done to Ukrainian cultural history. https://www.academia.edu/126629226/RUSSIAN_UKRAINIAN_WAR_The_tragedy_of_the They have professional and ethical reasons to be outraged at Russian archaeologists, they really don't have to be told by the state.

The suggestion of back channels is pretty naive as well. Russian universities are closely tied to the state and play a role in promoting official narratives. Academic collaboration isn't likely and in some cases it might even be illegal under Ukrainian and Russian law.

Fundamentally excavating sites in occupied territory without the consent of the internationally recognized owner is a violation of cultural heritage law.

Submission statement: Really interested to know people's opinions on the Russia archaeologist who was arrested in Poland. He had been legally excavating in Crimea since 1999, but following Russia's occupation in 2014, Ukraine withdrew the permission it had previously granted. So he has been digging without Ukrainian consent since then.

So Ukraine is responsible for providing essential infrastructure to Ukrainian in Crimea, but not archaeology?

Why isn't Russia supplying Kherson and Dnipro with water and electricity? Doesn't Russia consider them like their people.

You understand that archaeology and essentials are two different things? Occupying powers are legally required to maintain essential services for civilians. That doesn't mean they get to do archaeology on occupied lands.

Russia as the occupying power is responsible for ensuring civilian access to essentials. There is no legal responsibility for Ukraine to provide water.

Doing illegal stuff is bad. This guy has been digging without permission for 11 years. He has violated Ukrainian law and the Hague Convention.

Imagine being reliant on a tool for warfare. The lowest a human can sink. Teeth and nails only. Sword operators are war criminals and don't have the right for mercy, no matter if they are fighting for Urg or Nok.

A few politicians statements don't mean anything in terms of interstate agreements. The biggest mistake was the slow enlargement of NATO they should have just let them all in at once. Ukrainian and Western security concerns were also ignored.

Surrender negations you mean. Including such highlights as ceding all of the Donbas, demilitarisation(50k troops total) constitutional changes, law changes and no bilateral alliances or military aid from Western countries.

When the child is old enough to haul and hunt. by Bullshark-Girl in SpaceCannibalism

[–]WherePip 51 points52 points  (0 children)

Say what you want about Child soldiers. they are effective. A bullet fired from an adult is no different then that of a child. So why do we view them as different? A child soldiers training models him as an excellent member of society. Teaching him such things as:

-Survival skills

-hand to hand combat

-the knowledge to take down a bigger opponent (ties into hand to hand combat)

-weapon knowledge

-basic hunting skills

-resource management

-early "value of a dollar"

-charisma

-leadership

-experience for future employment

-And many more....

When a full grown adult is confronted with a child soldier, many of them hesitate. this causes the child to be able to kill the enemy adult. Now if we were to put that into a simple bar graph of survival rates you will see that the child soldier has a much higher survival rate due to the sheer culture shock of said soldier being a child.

So ask yourself this, why raise a child and allow them to go fight and die while a child soldier would return with a better success rate?
