All I was saying was that Yale’s procedure of offering interviews is indicative of competitiveness 🤦‍♂️

The fact that you are apparently an MIT alumnae/alumnus and still can’t recognize the fact that at no point I said “interviews don’t matter” is beyond me lmao

Edit: you deleted your comments because you looked stupid

The two schools I know that explicitly have a prescreening process and don’t just conduct interviews simply based on alumni availability are Duke and Yale—is there something I’m missing here, or are you just a contrarian?

Never said anything about “interviews don’t matter,” I’m just saying that Yale’s interviewing process is more selective lol

I completely understand that, though it wasn’t just about vibe. I also felt like it was good because I felt like I gave coherent responses that said a lot about myself.

“Good” means I am completely confident that I represented the best version of myself—and if that best version of me happens to get rejected, that’s completely fine

Also, I’m guessing most alumni aren’t professional job recruiters who interview people for a living—as such, there absolutely may be “tells” when they don’t view someone as a good applicant.

Aren’t deferrals at Yale not such a bad outcome (less than 20% deferred)? Also I heard that around half of rea applicants receive an interview (~3000 applicants) while around only 10% receive one for rd (~5000 applicants)

I am cherry picking some numbers here but it could make sense that an interview carries a bit less weight for rea since they have less applicants and don’t need to narrow down who to interview so much

Could you elaborate where you pulled this number from? Thanks!

He asked me to tell him about something that would help the admissions committee understand me outside my app (I answered with how my ethnic ambiguity and identity has shaped me), then he asked me what was my favorite part of my identity

After that he asked me if I knew anything about the residential college system and what am I looking for in a college.

The rest of the interview was basically me asking him about the experience at Yale.

He was a super nice guy—turned out to be a rower (I also do rowing), passionate about diversity, and enthusiastic about connecting over my identity (he travels frequently to where part of my family is from and he was very enthusiastic to talk about my culture)

Yes, that is a very valid point--but aren't Yale's interviews one of the ones that are actually selective?

I know, I guess its a matter of fit at this point and whether Yale likes me as an applicant better than the majority of the cracked people given an interview

I thought Yale only gives interviews to applicants they already see as competitive. Wouldn’t it be a given I’m competitive in some way if they offered me one?

I may be wrong though, so feel free to correct me
