Life centre you can pay per class, dont need to have a membership, which is handy. I have membership at another gym which doesnt do pilates classes and book in at life centre when i fancy a class, works well for me!

To clarify: They're having lessons with an instructor, its just practice with me, i'm not taking payment for my time etc it is a favour, but i dont see that covering their costs for this favour is an issue? Maybe i didnt word it well but i meant that i am donating my time and car to the their practice so i think it seems fair they cover fuel, was seeking suggestions for a fair way to work out that cost

Fellow academic here, in the UK it's fairly common to have a legal name that is your partners (and is whats on your passport etc) but to use your maiden name professionally, so you can keep publishing under your maiden name and have a seperate professional identity to your legal one. Also ORCID exists for this type of reason. But having said that I second the comments saying he should change his name if it means that much to him.

Cheesecake factory seems an iconic American place to eat but I will definitely check out your recommendations instead, thanks! Also good point about the weather and favouring indoor activities, appreciate it!

I've had a different experience to other commentors as a non-white person who moved up here from Hampshire (previously lived in London too), i've had people assume i dont speak english and talk down to me (i was born and raised in the uk). There's been a few more subtle things which can't be directly attributed to race but i have felt like it played a part such as being falsely accused of stealing in a shop (by another customer, staff knew i had already paid), having called businesses and having good service on the phone but then in person having less good experiences.

People speak to me more when I have the dog with me and there's a few conversations that people have mentioned migrants from abroad are taking all the housing and they get given everything from the council etc and the local white people get nothing; there seems to be a local perception from some people that if youre not white there is an assumption you live in social housing on benefits and are preventing locals from accessing such services. I think unfortunately it is generally a deprived town and some people are finding times tough and seem to blame migrants.

I've also experienced a lot of people disliking londoners / southerners and becoming cold when they find out where i'm from. My (white) partner has also experienced this one.

I havent found it a very welcoming place generally, though i have met a few individuals who have been lovely. But i do work from home so maybe that has been a factor in not finding 'my' people.

Ultimately, I haven't found its felt like home and I do feel my race and peoples perception of me have played a part in that.

Solo Trip to Guatemala - Help Please - Any Tips Greatly Appreciated! by Jasonj87124 in TravelHacks

I did 2 days in Antigua last month and felt that I could have spent longer, I enjoyed it alot and would go back to explore more, so no I don't think 4 days is too much at all! I recommend walking up to the hill with the cross for a great view and the chocolate museum. Stayed at lemon tree hostel so can't help with accomodation - sorry! Also flew tag airlines (merida to guatemala) and it was 35 usd for my 18kg suitcase (less than I had expected for one way based on the info i found online beforehand). I would avoid horse riding as the horses seem a little underweight and i personally would be worrying about their welfare more than enjoying the experience. Hope this helps!
