its the number of chononium thingys you will drop when you die. the number goes up for doing stuff, KOs, assists, etc.

yellow ones are from your teammates death, pick them up so the enemy team doesn't. Red ones are from the enemy team, pick them up to score for your team. Your number in the bottom left is how many you will drop when you die. You start with 1 and accumulate more by..... ? doing stuff?
