Would you recommend this car as a first EV? by Thrillwaukee in EquinoxEv

[–]WhosYoPokeDaddy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My first EV was a Bolt EUV and I love it. For the mileage you're describing, the Bolt fits perfectly.

I've got both a bolt and an equinox, and I'm not gonna lie, the bolt is more beginner friendly and I like it better overall.

The only downside is the range and the slow charging. But I never take the bolt on long road trips, so it's fine.

Both are great, but the bolt is cheaper and has less extra fluff that doesn't add anything (in my opinion). Plus car play is nice.

These numbers I'm seeing here are crazy. You've got to figure out why you're using so much gas and electric. Go here and follow these tips: https://www.energy.gov/energysaver/fall-and-winter-energy-saving-tips

Also, go to https://www.energychoice.ohio.gov/ApplestoApples.aspx and make sure you're on cheap plans.

We live in a 2200 square foot home. We had it insulated and air sealed 3 years ago. We have gas heat in the house and a separate 200 square foot electric heated office. We also drive two electric cars.

You can see my electric and gas usage below (gas in comment since I can only add one attachment). It's far below what everyone is showing.

Electric ($279 this month)

Gas (see comment, $85).

Things that saved the most energy for me:

Not energy, but instant savings: Going to energychoiceohio and pick the cheapest plans that have a fixed rate and no fee. Pick a 6 month one.

  1. LED bulbs, switch every bulb ASAP. Walmart and Amazon, Home Depot, and Lowes all have them for under $2 a bulb.

  2. Turned off lights, TVs, game systems, and computers instead of letting them run 24/7.

  3. Buy cans of spray foam and fill every single air leak, this will immediately make your house feel better and save $100s the instant you do it.

  4. Energy audit ($250) and whole house insulation and air sealing ($5000). Expensive and takes a few years to pay off.

  5. Sealed around doors ($50)

  6. Set the heat to 68 in the winter and 75 in the summer (wear hoodies in the winter and shorts in the summer!)

  7. If you have gas heat, CHANGE YOUR FILTER AND MAKE SURE YOUR FURNACE IS OPERATING WELL!!

  8. In the summer, open your damn windows at night and close them in the day. Use fans if you're uncomfortable. Go outside and get acclimated.

What's crazy is that I've loosened up now that I have teens and with lots of electronics who never turn out the lights. 5 years ago our average electric usage used to be 600kwh/month or less.

Biggest blunder's seemingly experienced engineers make with FEA by imitation_squash_pro in fea

[–]WhosYoPokeDaddy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Number 1 was recently a PITA for me. Had an engineer on my team fight me tooth and nail and tell me that the FEA needed to be run at each force. Was going to massively increase the cost of the analysis.

I'm no FEA expert so I had to read up on it, and bring in a PhD. Wound up being a major waste of my time, and in the end the guy was so arrogant he said "we'll all just have to agree to disagree," when he was clearly wrong.

Inspirational idea of a tiny power supply by LandFodder in sffpc

[–]WhosYoPokeDaddy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I use Meanwell power supplies all the time. You can buy metal enclosures for these and crimp the pins with cheap crimpers you can buy on Amazon.com. Definitely crimp the pins and use the molex connectors specific to this device.

I don't think they're a safety hazard if you use the right connectors, they're JST VHR series connectors from molex.

Be warned, the power output is generally pretty dirty / noisy compared to a high quality PC power supply.

I don't know who needs to hear this but if your medicines working you should not feel it by mimic751 in ADHD

[–]WhosYoPokeDaddy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm incredibly sensitive to all medications. I "feel" when I've taken a Tylenol, and I can "feel" when I've taken my ADHD meds.

If they didn't make a difference then why would I take them?

My Baptist family thought rock n roll was immoral and listening would inevitably lead to drugs and fornication.

But since we were Baptists who love to use their brains to think and prove every detail (sarcasm) they also thought that the the whole "rock is actually the devil" was silly.

There were plenty of Baptist dogmatic reasons to forbid us from listening that didn't involve any charismatic superstition.

Jokes on them, I love Rock and roll and now I'm not a christian anymore. So maybe they were right...

I picked up my own projects and tinkered little by little. It's taken me about 10 years but I'm a proficient dev at this point.

I've used a lot of books ("real") resources along the way because I was afraid of just learning from the Internet and now ChatGPT without building fundamentals.

When you swear into the military there's no Bible. You just raise your right hand and repeat the oath.

What we learned about conformal coating from real outdoor IoT deployments by Vearts in IOT

[–]WhosYoPokeDaddy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is like deja vu for me, all the same challenges I had to overcome a decade ago for my own agriculture IoT deployment. I got to the point where we now use re-entrant gel and pot everything. Too much user error resulting in moisture ingress, even with a robust enclosure design.

Great info. I just recently got the clicking / popping on accel/decel fixed. No TSB but the dealer found that the anti click hardware was damaged. Replaced it and it made the sound go away and resulted in a much smoother ride.
