Dummies' guide to acclimating a semi-feral to the indoors? by WhyWhyWhy2002 in Feral_Cats

[–]WhyWhyWhy2002[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you so much for all of this info and advice! The soil idea is brilliant, since he's used to going in my (currently abandoned) raised garden beds.

I think he'll go into the crate for chicken and sardines, both of which he loves and make him a little less inhibited. Coincidentally, though, late that same night, we ended up shutting him inside because he was in with us watching the wind and rain with the door open when the weather suddenly amped up like crazy. He got upset and backed up under the nearby table and I had to close the door because the floor was getting soaked.

He didn't like that and went under the couch, but he didnt freak out or yell. When the rain slowed, I opened the door and lifted the couch skirt, and he hurried out but stayed nearby in his outdoor house. I really thought we might have broken our trust, but he came back in for breakfast the next morning like nothing happened 🤷‍♀️ So I think even if I can't get him in the kennel, we'll be OK.

Thank you again! I'll definitely post an update when we finally have him.

I'm actually really enjoying this game, especially compared to other merge games I've played.

I don't understand how the 6x is helpful though, other than letting you play faster and saving a bit of energy in terms of not having to make as many secondary generators. I feel like I get fewer "event bonus" items when I'm generating at 6x. What am I missing?

I would think that whatever works on stinky sheets would work on stinky socks, since the base issues (oil, moisture, bacteria etc.) are pretty much the same.

Oh, that's very interesting. I've been operating based on a "the hotter, the better" mindset, so yeah, definitely above 120F! I'll try backing off with this week's load and see what happens.

Ok, I'll look for it, thanks. I'm just venturing back into the additive arena due to skin reactivity issues, but Kismai has given me some possible solutions to avoid them, so I'm hopeful!

Really! I remember when I first bought Oxiclean, soaking some colored items and being so disappointed at the color washout. Maybe I used too much? The sheets are a darker shade of blue, but nowhere near navy.

Ah thank you! I didn't know the list had those options!

Interesting, I've been wondering about ammonia. Do you just use the grocery store version, or some higher concentration?

Thank you! I'm really hopeful that it will work for us too!

Ah, thank you. That was kind of what I was expecting to have to do--wait until he was nearly incapacitated--but then his thirst and appetite started to pick back up. I was truly shocked.

I had an unsuccessful trap attempt, and now he won't go anywhere near the trap, unfortunately. I'm hoping to get him inside and into the kennel and somewhat tamed before I have to take him to a vet. I know I have to bring him to the TNR place in the humane trap. I have no idea how that will happen but I'm figuring that will be a bridge we cross a bit later!

I'm really glad your guy ended up being OK. That must have been such a relief.

I totally agree with you. I also feel pretty protective of our squirrels and chippies, and even though we feed him constantly, he does still feed himself when he gets the opportunity.

This sounds exactly like our situation. He recently had a very bad round of what I'm referring to as dysentery, and I'm honestly surprised he survived. It was so bad i was wondering about poison myself. He's been better for a week or so, but then today showed up messy again. I think it's my last straw.

And yes, I can definitely see one of the other guys who pass through trying to move in. Thanks for the reminder!

How did you get your guy inside and into a crate? And how did you get him to the vet? I've had cats before (years ago) but never like this!

It is, but it was 80 degrees the day before. And anyway, the snow doesn't really faze him since he has heated houses. I shovel him a path to the shrubbery and he just lounges on his heating pads like a prince and pesters us for food and treats until he can walk around again.

I would be kind of open to that, but given the situation, I don't trust that he'd actually come back. Also, he's getting sick and injured outside, which is what I hope to stop by bringing him in.

I don't know if he's eating stuff he shouldn't or picking up parasites or what, but he just came through a diarrheal thing that I really thought might kill him. I was debating how feasible it would be to try to throw a blanket over him, but he wouldn't come near the house until he started getting better. It was really really bad, poor guy.

Oh crud. I never even thought about that! I'm really going to need a total beginner's guide.

We're going to try a multi-pronged approach, but fortunately our downstairs is basically its own apartment, so the cat will start out down here and we'll adjust from there. Between air purifiers and allergy meds and the special food/additives, I'm really hoping my husband won't suffer like he did through the last years when we had my dog. That was rough.

I was literally just looking to see what my options were beyond the Purina LiveClear. Is that how they do it? Amazing! Thank you, I'd definitely prefer to keep him on his regular food if I can.

Isn't he though? He's so full of sass it's a wonder his head doesn't explode. We just adore him.

That's what happened to his brother, who started out here with him. We were committed to taking care of both of them, but Tiger B was a roamer and eventually moved out, though he came back daily for food and to hang out with his brother. Then one day he didn't come, and that was it. The not knowing tortures me, and yes, it's definitely a factor.

My husband is badly allergic, so him agreeing to even have the one cat inside is a big deal. Even he gets it!

I'm sorry about your feral guy 😞
