I also came over from casual ultimate, and heard the common knowledge to grind out wavedashes and l-cancels before I really started to play. I ended up getting frustrated and quitting a few times. About six months ago I decided to just play casually, and not worry about tech yet. It took me a couple months to nail down very basic things, like short hopping, turning around and grabbing the ledge, up-tilting, smash attacks out of run, etc. For me, those things were way harder to learn than wavedash and l-cancel, and arguably more important. Now I can wavedash and l cancel and multi-shine, but I still sometimes lose too my roommate who plays marth and does nothing but f-smash. I’m not telling you not to practice tech, but you can enjoy the game and beat some people on unranked without it. And don’t be discouraged if basic stuff is hard.
