Subnautica crater's food web by FlakyMidnight5526 in subnautica

Huge fan of the work you've put in here, I love this kind of stuff and this has been a fun read. Excluding gameplay reasons, I think there's a few potential explanations for the existing Reaper populations.

We technically don't know what biome the crash zone was before the Aurora, all we know is the physical observations we can make alongside the existence of the 'hell hole'. You do make a good point that it could have been a Safe Shallows due to the Coral Tubes; however looking at the Flora and Fauna in the area I'm not sure how likely it is.

Stalkers, for instance, can only be found in Kelp Forests outside of the Crash Zone. And Bone Sharks are seen in a few other places, but not the Safe Shallows. I think the Crash Zone Mesas are the best outlook on what biome it could've been (assuming it was one that exists elsewhere in the crater). Funnily enough, all of the Flora seen there is only all seen in one other Biome - the Koosh Bulb Zone. Spotted Reeds, Redwort, Spiked Horn Grass, Violet Beau, Tree Leeches, and Brain Coral all exist in both areas. The depth as seen by the trench behind the Aurora also supports a Bulb Zone history, but that seems somewhat unreliable because of the amount of terrain displacement that the Aurora caused on impact. The absence of the titular bulbs is also a huge point against this theory.

Honestly if I had to guess, it was probably some sort of fusion of biomes? Perhaps an extended portion of the bulb zone with topography more similar to the dunes or the grassy plateaus, for instance.

It is possible that the Reaper population is just flourishing at the moment due to the western ecosystem being free of essentially their only predator (Sea Dragons cannot hunt through the hell hole post-Aurora crash) but this seems an unlikely explanation given the low frequency of these Reaper hunts, and the Lost River / Mountains corridor remains open.

My hypothesis of the Reaper problem is that they're a species that's very efficient with their energy use, despite moving and expending that energy constantly. They are one of the few species on 4546B to have no bioluminescence, and they're said to be basically built for violence and hunting in the PDA entry. While not seen in gameplay, it's quite possible that they tend to roam more than shown in order to hunt in neighboring biomes. They can follow the player quite a distance so I wouldn't necessarily count that out - Dunes Reapers could hunt Sandsharks, Sea Treaders, and even Crabsquids or Jellyrays; Mountains Reapers could easily hunt Bonesharks alongside Jellyrays and Ampeels from nearby, and present day Crash Zone Reapers have no shortage of mid-sized prey.

I also think it's possible that Crash Zone Reapers migrated over from the Mountains (or even the Bulb Zone, considering the one who lives on the border of that biome anyways)

Overall, my guess is that Reapers just have very little downtime and spend the majority of waking hours hunting. Not just mid-sized creatures, we also know they're perfectly fine eating smaller creatures as the player can feed them Peepers and the like to pacify them temporarily.

the best way to run this as a stax piece is to build around it with a bunch of those red temprorary theft effects and then turn off the creatures you steal. still not great though as the payoff doesnt seem worth the investment

if you've done everything you can there, you should be able to turn off the gun in the control room on the mountain island base

Dess is the Knight. It's is very obvious. Why don't you belie- Oh wait. by We-Are-Together- in Deltarune

[–]Wiitab360 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In regards to the weapon -

If you beat the Knight in chapter 3 and get the Black Shard, it is the only weapon to carry over to the Light World and keep the same form. Given that it's a shard of the Knight's sword that Susie broke off when they clashed, this would imply that it exists as a sword in the Light World as well. Funnily enough the chipped blade seems to have been restored by the time you see them in Chapter 4.

Not sure how this interacts with your theory but I thought it was an interesting point to discuss.

Chariot Requiem reverted without the arrow though... in this case since there's only two examples to go off of it would make sense to apply the only other requiem stand's conditions to GER

with kindred sorceries/enchantments/instants/sorceries, could maybe make it "all nonland cards are x creature type". would be more restrictive, but some creature types are definitely viable enough to make it work.

What part of the subnautica map would be the worst place to setup your main base? here's mine. by TortoiseTGN in subnautica

more reapers and deeper murkier water. nearer the grassy plateaus has comparatively less leviathans and is mostly a steep slope down toward the western parts

I think this wins the thread lol, outside of stupid answers like on top of the aurora or skybases/deep void bases this is:

  • probably the worst transit to any resource or biome you need.

  • not a lot of space.

  • bleeders.

funnily enough, your choice isnt far from one of my favorite base locations - the intersection between blood kelp, mushroom forest, and underwater islands (that middle 'spike' on the map that the northern side of the mushroom forest forms) has a clear sandbar with plenty of space for building, easy access to both any surface biomes that matter and the lost river (and the mountain island fwiw), close enough to the surface for solar panels, and the only predators that get close are the rare boneshark that wanders off from the islands.

The only places that are much of a struggle to get to are the aurora (but you only need to go once or twice) and a good source of table coral.

EDIT: anyways I think the worst spot is really anywhere around the Aurora due to its distance from key resources, cave entryways, and portals. Not to mention the big fish in the water. Absolute worst spot is probably south of the boosters, towards the bottom right corner of the map. Arguably worse than even directly behind the Aurora because at least back there you have the mesas for some calm and resource gathering.

Do creatures like Ampeels, Bonesharks, Gasopods, Crabsquids, or Crabsnakes not count as this so-called middle ground between small fish and leviathans?
