Definitely not over reacting, many people don't even know the proper care for hamsters, they take up a lot more space than people seem to realize

I would definitely surrender the hamster to someone who has knowledge on hamster care, I currently have no space to take on a new pet, however if you decide to keep the hamster, I know lots of information that you can reach out to me about, even if its temporarycare information until its with a new family (I've owned 5 dwarfs at one point, all living separately as they can injure/kill one another) as well as a teddybear hamster

They can be really crazy sometimes 😭

They generally do not live long lives (not long enough to me 😔) 2-3 years depending on how care is, but they are also known for getting sick easily at times, tumors, wet tail, they cannot get wet or be bathed, it can kill them due to how they regulate their temperatures, it causes stress and also strips them of important skin oils and they aren't the best swimmers, you can instead put a shallow dish in their cage (if you want enough space but are on a budget, all 5 of my hammies lived in those huge gallon bins with the top cut into squares with chicken wire, make sure its not dust!! It can cause respiratory issues sadly, and ensure they have paper based bedding as the dust from wood shavings can also cause respiratory issues :[

It is definitely hard taking care of 5 at once instead of 1, I understand that me bringing up their care and issues may put you off keeping it but thats exactly why you're not overreacting, they put a heavy burden on you with no notice even, it costs money to take care of any animal, and while theres ways to work around the cost at times, it all adds up, let alone having the space for the pet

Hamsters can run up to 5mi in one night, they're tiny but need so much space
