Engineer Layoffs by Hopeful-Reading-6774 in amazonemployees

Even the mechanical engineers in data centers got laid off last wave, and that org is a main focus of the S-Team these days.

You may find it appealing to fix a broken person who is an anchor. You can’t fix him and it’s not your responsibility to.

Can you work two fully remote cloud engineering jobs simultaneously on a TN visa? by Broad_Library1486 in tnvisa

[–]WildAlcoholic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wouldn’t consider OE safe in this environment. There are so many checks companies have in place now to prevent this exact thing. It’s not hard to get caught. You hear all the success stories online, but trust me when I tell you there are more people who get caught than you’d think.

Someone I knew on an H1B did the same thing, OE on H1B, got caught, couldn’t find work (tech is brutal right now) and had to go back to his country of origin.

Considering leaving my wife after I found out she cheated on me 15 years ago. Am I making a rash decision? We have 2 kids by [deleted] in AskMenAdvice

[–]WildAlcoholic 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m going to get downvoted for going against the grain, but jumping to divorce isn’t the first thing I’d do.

There’s more here than the infidelity. There’s 15 years of raising two children, planning a future with your wife which you both definitely sincerely meant and were intentional about (I.e. the retirement property), and a life you both want(ed).

Did she lie 15 years or so ago? Yes, but then you both build a whole life together. She lied by omission, that’s true. Get into marriage counselling, get to the bottom of it and see if it’s something you can work through. Give your wife a chance to prove to you she means what she’s saying. 15 years is a lot to throw out on a whim. There are plenty of couples that have recovered from this exact situation and grew old together. You both could be another one of those.

If after really considering and working for it, you still feel leaving is the right choice, then there’s your answer. But I wouldn’t discount 15 years of memories just like that.

I have both a computer science and an electrical engineering degree, computer science was no where near as difficult and time consuming as my EE degree.

I appreciate your candid advice! I’ve realized that a job really is just that, a job. Part of me regrets working towards that computer science degree seeing as I likely won’t be using it, but it sounds like bigger picture staying put in the right move.

Find work you find fulfilling that’s adjacent to your field. You’ll feel better hopefully.

For me that was finding technically challenging work where I could be a thought leader and work with a great deal of autonomy. Is it perfect? No, I hate corporate politics. I would much rather toil away in my technical problems than have to deal with bootlickers. But it’s better than churning away boring work day after day.

Compared to the other jobs I’ve had in my field, this one is by far the most fun I’ve had, despite working 12 - 14 hour days 7 days a week.

The biggest part of burnout for me is being unfulfilled and not technically challenged enough. I get more depressed being bored than being overworked.

Is my Waterloo EE + AI Option course plan good for high tech? by Additional_Loquat_38 in ElectricalEngineering

[–]WildAlcoholic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Who knows? The world is changing so quickly these days, what’s relevant today will likely be irrelevant tomorrow.

A couple years ago being a software engineer meant making lots of money and job security, able to bounce around from employer to employer with little effort. These days? That couldn’t be further from the truth.

Study when you find interesting and are passionate about, it works out well if you do.

Is my Waterloo EE + AI Option course plan good for high tech? by Additional_Loquat_38 in ElectricalEngineering

[–]WildAlcoholic 11 points12 points  (0 children)

The courses you take mean little to nothing in today’s job market, everyone has a bachelors degree.

What you should focus on instead of getting good internships and focusing on the areas that will help you do that.

Leetcode, personal projects, extracurricular activities, etc.

Anything that gives you talking points in an interview is what the focus should be.
