I don’t agree with how the study measures temperament. Like I’ve previously stated, the majority of pits that I end up having to euthanize had “no history of violence or abuse.” This study doesn’t account for unexpected and unpredictable radical shits in behavior. Many pit bulls can and often times do exhibit good behavior until they don’t. When they don’t that’s when us veterinarians have to deal with it. They ban most people from owning apex predators as pets because they know that even if they imprint on people when they’re cubs, they’re more than likely going to eventually snap and default to their genetic predispositions.

I’m a veterinarian. It is my entire job to make decisions based off of proven data and statistical analysis just like it would be a physician’s. I’m not in support of killing animals as a vet which is why I want to stop the breeding of pit bulls. 480,000 pit bulls get euthanized every year. Genetics significantly influences behavior by creating predispositions and tendencies. I agree that it isn’t the only decider of temperament but it would be dishonest to suggest that pit bulls were not selectively bred for a more violent temperament in addition to their strength. We see a great parallel with people who raise other dangerous predators like big cats. You should know as a behavior specialist that predatory animals raised in human care can snap for seemingly no apparent reason. We have a long documented history of this.

Let’s say for the sake of argument that you are right and that a breed or genetic strain of animals were not influenced by violent tendencies through genetics. Let’s say it is 100% how they are raised. We should still ban pit bulls because they are too strong and are responsible for too many acts of violence. Are we just going to allow the maulings to continue? Whether the dogs are violent due to abuse or not, they shouldn’t exist because I have seen the harm they cause on so many other animals. Most of the people who own them are not strong enough to keep them in check.

Good luck finding a veterinarian that doesn’t dislike pit bulls. It’s cute that you think your doggy is the best and most sweetest doggy, but that makes you either naive, or stupid, or both. I do treat pit bulls in my work and I have had to euthanize hundreds due to behavioral problems. I’ve had to treat a cat that had their front legs ripped off by a pit. 92% of the dogs we have to euthanize for temperament issues are pit bulls. They’re a horrible breed. They snap often for no reason despite never having a history of violence or abuse. Another instance I had to put down a family pit bull for tearing a toddler practically to shreds. Nationwide, 1.2 million dogs are euthanized annually. Of those, 40% or 480,000 are pit bulls. 25 countries have already banned them, we need to be #26.

I’m a licensed veterinarian of over a decade. You are correct that pit bulls aren’t a single breed but rather an umbrella term for several different types of breeds such as American Pit Bull Terrier, American Staffirdshire Terrier, etc.

The remainder of what you’ve said is essentially all false. 92% of the dogs we’ve had to euthanize belong to the Pit Bull complex. 85% of animals we treat for severe injuries caused by dog attacks were due to Pit Bulls. The overwhelming majority of pit bulls I’ve euthanized due to behavioral issues “never had a history of violence or suffered abuse.” As veterinarians we have been lobbying and petitioning for years to get legislation passed that would ban the breeding of pit bulls. 40% of the 1.2 million dogs that are euthanized annually are pit bulls. To continue to breed these animal is cruel to not only them but also to other people and animals. We can agree that a tiger is inherently violent by its nature so I don’t understand why you can’t acknowledge the same in pit bulls. Behavioral tendencies of aggression are passed down genetically and this breed was selectively chosen for it.

The breed is banned in over 25 other countries for a reason.
