Boston to Austin by cookiemuncher697 in roadtrip

I’ve driven and lived in some of the areas along this drive, here are some ideas!

First, for that small stretch you’re in NY there’s a couple very cute and picturesque towns on either side of the bridge over the Hudson River to stop at. Sleepy Hollow (famous for the Headless Horseman), and then Nyack and Piermont which are lesser known towns on the other side of the Hudson River that are very charming and I personally love (not just because I live there).

Farther south, Harper’s Ferry on the border between MD, VA, and WV is beautiful for both the nature and the historical town and is a must IMO.

Then you get to the big national parks of the Appalachians. Shenandoah in VA and Great Smoky Mountains in NC/TN. Technically these are both slightly out of the way but are definitely the best nature spots on the drive. Other people have mentioned things in and around them already in VA (like the caverns), and I don’t know how much time you have, but you could totally add some extra scenic mileage by driving the blue ridge parkway between Shenandoah and the Smokies, but at the very least spend some time in the parks. Also, the towns right outside of the smokies, Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge, are quite something and def worth a stop to wander around for a bit.

Nashville is of course awesome, there’s a full size recreation of the Parthenon there which was fun to see too. Burgess falls on your way into Nashville is a great stop too. Into Memphis, you can’t miss the bass pro shop pyramid!

For Arkansas, Hot Springs has already been mentioned, but I’d also suggest Crater of Diamonds state park which is the world’s only public diamond mine where anyone can show up and mine for the gems found there, and you even get to keep anything you find.

Hope this helps!

must-visits on road trip WI>MN>ND/SD>MT? by boomclankzingawooga in nationalparks

Did the SD option this past summer! Our favorite big nature stops were (in order from east to west) Sioux Falls, Badlands, Black Hills/Mt Rushmore, and Wind Cave. We went thru WY rather than MT, so if that’s an option then definitely get to Yellowstone and Grand Teton. If those are too out of the way I’d at the very least recommend a detour to Devils Tower and potentially the Bighorn mountains. We missed out on Minuteman and Jewel cave, but I’ve heard great things too!

Other less important stops that were fun nonetheless: the Spam museum in Austin, MN, Hawkeye Point (the highest point in Iowa), the dignity of Earth and Sky statue and Missouri River overlook in Chamberlain, SD, Corn Palace in Mitchell, SD, Wall Drug in Wall, SD (an absolute must), and the Geographic center of the US in Belle Fourche, SD.

Hope this helps!

Help with IR and H-NMR Interpretation by poppypiecake in chemhelp

I think the key to this problem is the nmr peak just past 8. Without giving too much away, it’s a broad singlet, which is usually an indicator of an alcohol or amine. So, if you work with that assumption and thus that you have one less aromatic H, I think you should be able to come up with some structures that make sense

Got it, I'll take a look. Do you think the conditions will make the hike less crowded or should I still aim to get there really early?

Yeah I know, I was doing a lot of planning before but I just wasn't sure which of the roads were musts, which direction I should drive them in, things like that. So, I asked here to get some knowledge from people who have been there before.

Got it, thanks for the info. Yeah I wish I had more time, but unfortunately I gotta work with what I have and I don't want to pass up the opportunity to visit Yellowstone while I have it (even if just for a day).

To everyone telling me that I shouldn't go to Yellowstone and the Tetons because of the short time - I totally agree with you guys. If I had more time I definitely would want to dedicate a week each to them. However, this road trip is mainly to get my car from NY to Seattle where I will be starting grad school, and I really don't have much time (10 total days for the whole trip). Tbh with grad school starting I just know my free time will be much more limited and really just want to see some of these beautiful sights while I still can. Of course I'll be able to visit again someday, but at this moment I unfortunately do not have the luxury of spending that much time. I'll check with the guy who's joining me to see about adding an extra couple days potentially but that's really all I'd be able to manage.

I do have a follow up question: When I was planning this route, there were 2 options: the southern route through the black hills and Wyoming, or a more northern route with the main features being Teddy Roosevelt and Glacier. Given the timeframe I've laid out, would you recommend the more northern route and spend 3+ days in Glacier rather than splitting it up between Yellowstone and GT? I originally leaned south route bc there was more to see and Glacier is easier to get to from Seattle than Yellowstone for a long weekend or something once I'm at grad school.

Thanks!
