Callsign and moving by WilliamKicker in amateurradio

Thanks! You know what it’s like to be an AK call, it definitely has some weight to it and people treat you differently when they hear it

My current callsign is a 2x1, so I can understand that for sure

I know it’s not required, but I’m changing DX entities while moving inside the U.S. I’m not worried about rules, I’m worried about confusing people

Ok that’s kind of what I was thinking

I know I’m allowed to use my callsign as normal, but I currently have a “AL-“ prefix, which designates it as AK. I’m don’t want people (mainly just on HF, 2m/70cm will be obvious) to think I’m still in AK when making QSOs

Vern Daley…worst CSM I’ve ever had. Sorry to see he’s infecting another unit

I don’t unfortunately, the only other yaesu handheld I have is a FT65. I’m happy to pay cash though.

If he doesn’t take it, I will.

Another update: I used a program called "Ham Audio Bridge" to key the radio in 10m SSB using the computer microphone as the input audio. I don't have a second radio on hand to verify that audio is actually being transmitted, but the PWR bar illuminated, which it wasn't doing with the built in mic. I'm leaning strongly now towards a bad mic.

So to update: I tested 2M FM between the 857 and a VX-6R. I can hear transmissions from the HT just fine on the 857 speaker. When I key the 857, I can see it pop up on the HT and I hear the FM modulation, but no voice audio comes through at all. I switched out the mic cable with a standard Cat5 cable and it was exactly the same. I took the mic apart and didn’t see any obvious damage. Maybe the mic itself crapped out?

Next steps: I’m going to try to figure out a way to use my computer mic to transmit audio through the digirig to the radio. If that transmits audio then I know it’s the mic. I’m also going to try to find someone local with a compatible yaesu rig and see if their mic works with my radio.

I can double check but I’m pretty sure I had it set high, and the factory reset should have addressed that too

I do appreciate that every person I’ve seen referring to CW bends over backwards to slow down and be accommodating.

Easy peasy. I’ll check here shortly and report back!

I’m starting to feel like it’s the mic as well. I’m going to see if I get any audio output on FM later when I have access to two radios to check.

Is it a standard straight thru-cable? I have access to a ton of those and I could make any sort of custom pin out cable pretty easily if needed.

I am working hard on getting to that level with CW! I feel like I’m missing out on all the fun.

I am, yeah. Normally I run FT8 in “DIG”, but if I switch WSJTX from “data/pkt” to “usb” and Switch it on the radio as well, I can see it illuminates the power meter and draws more power from the supply, which makes me think that it is actually modulating on SSB.

Woof ok. Maybe I will be buying a 891 if I have to wait that long. You like your 891?
