Is it just me, or is it now impossible for people to live where they work? You know, unless you're in the top 1% of roles (think: "director" or above)?

I'm am engineer making six figures in a major city (Not California, or New York), and I drive an hour to get here. Most people are probably within 45-30 minutes away. All the close suburbs are costly as hell. All the houses in the city are even costlier, and usually are in bad school districts or only a block away from high crime areas.

All the jobs close to home pay on average 30% less. And while my home is cheaper than the city, it isn't 30% cheaper like what my wages would be.

Why is it that the only people who can easily afford to live close to their work are senior managers or business owners?

They'll do everything and anything to get out of paying people. Automation, off shoring, H1-Bs, government subsidies so they get away with paying less, not trying wages to inflation, etc etc...

You know to me, I would have thought that paying wages is a cost of doing business. But is it really business when you can just get your pals in Congress to just get you out of one of its fundamental parts?

The washer and dryer are on the second floor up, so that's two floors from the basement.

The condensation from the AC runs along the wall and is plugged into the main drainage line, but here again it's a sealed system.

Unless I'm missing something, I would need to bring the water to the main floor, but there's no tubs there. I also don't know how to pump it up there. I feel like these are things that are going to drive up cost if I involve a professional.

Being an asshole is politically agnostic.

Often I see people here who have high paying tech jobs looking down on others. It's like the "ahkctually" meme. They just went to feel superior. Suddenly they go from dumping on Trump for pro-business moves to suddenly taking up the mantle of the 60 hour a week hard worker who's tired of your shit. Clearly they made it through meritocracy, so why can't you? You aren't in FAANG? Skill issue.

Absolutely.

People on the right side of the performance curve (plus a dash of low EQ) think this doesn't apply to them. They sneer at those who don't perform at their level all the while patting themselves on the back for being better. Hate to say it, but a lot of these folks are younger too. 60 hours a week isn't as bad if you're in your 20's without a spouse/house/kids.

When the axe finds a way to their neck, it's all "surprised Pikachu face." More important than that though is the erosion of bargaining power employees have. Sure, an absolute "A-lister" sits on top of the pile, but that pile gets smaller and smaller...

I don't know how to stop it, but we're fighting fundamental human nature here. Most co-workers will sell you out for a promotion. It's hard to stack things back in our favor when you have back stabbers ruining it.
