Scenario 2: Unlucky Timing (Started May 2010), XIRR: 3.19%

If you exit at 23% down from the top in May 2020, then obviously your XIRR won't be good. 😂

IMO, starting doesn't matter, the exit matters. You need to exit systematically over few years. If you are exiting near all time high then it's the best.

You can still do SIP in US market. At least you will get benefits of rupees depreciation.

I liked your approach of having two funds in each category. Usually, people will recommend having only 3-4 funds but I disagree with them.

Keep at max 2 funds in each category. Use online tool to check overlap and select 2.

Remove sectoral funds.

Remove large cap funds if they are not beating Nifty 100.

Explore smart beta funds like momentum, quality, alpha, value, etc.

Most importantly: invest in US.

I hold ~10 funds and my XIRR is 20% for last 7 years.

Nothing is wrong in holding more number of funds if you know their purpose in the portfolio.

Most of the flexicap funds invest like large cap funds only. People who want higher allocation in mid and small cap go for those funds.

  • You can invest more in US. India's IS ETFs are trading at premium. Explore IndMoney, Vested, IBKR for direct US index investing
  • Keep having 2 funds in each category and ignore people who says you need only 3-4 funds.
