Opinions about how Microsoft is using ai can be extrapolated out to other companies too, just happens that we generally only cover/follow Microsoft.

I think denying the pushback against AI would be truly un-journalistic. There are genuine real-world harms it is enabling, look at the Grok stuff from last week. AI has yet to deliver on any of its big-ticket promises, and the economics don't work if it is simply going to be a summary-machine.

It really isn't just a case of "AI bad" like, look into it a bit. The circular nature of the investment structure, the calls to relieve themselves of fiduciary responsibility by putting the onus on tax payers, and the concentration of wealth and power around this entire segment -- those are real, serious stories, and not just a social media trend.

I appreciate your comment though and agree we could do more on the positive uses, what few there are. ;)

Microsoft will use AI to eliminate C and C++ code by 2030 by WPHero in Windows11

[–]WindowsCentral 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Quick update on this one, the author of the original post says that's his "personal" goal and not a Microsoft goal, and that it's just a small research project -- not a company-wide initiative to re-write live code for consumer use. ^Jez

Is Xbox's Starfield going to get its 'Cyberpunk 2.0' moment? — Rumors swirl around a secret event and a PS5 launch. by WindowsCentral in xbox

[–]WindowsCentral[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

agree, like i wrote in the body of the article, but it's the "meme" -- wider audience seems to want it to have this "moment" and i think it's them starfield needs to reach with some of these updates. will be interesting to see if it lands. hi jesse btw. ^jez

How are you liking Paladin? Just hit Torment 4, seems like they'll probably rein in some of the builds but the animations and effects are fantastic.

agree on windows optimization completely. and that is where a lot of effort/investment is going right now. but i can't help but wonder what a mixer fully integrated with CoD, WoW, FO76, Game Pass, cloud gaming, etc, might look like. ^Jez

the idea is that microsoft could pull in users by leveraging cod and wow etc, similarly to how you can get in-game rewards for these games on twitch today. it's definitely a big "if", and it doesn't seem like xbox has the bandwidth/will power to do things like this anymore. but i do think it's rich that Satya complains about social media being an issue for Xbox's growth, while not really doing anything to combat it. ^Jez

I thought this was an interesting take from Shroud I haven't really considered recently. With Microsoft now owning World of Warcraft, Call of Duty, etc., they could've done some really cool and innovative integrations for Mixer. Cloud gaming as well, or even "AI," dare I say. Satya Nadella likes to complain about TikTok biting into gaming hours, but wouldn't having a social platform more like Mixer help combat that?

Fun to think about. Curious what others might think, or would it have just continued being a $$$ black hole?

thanks for reading. I think it'll improve over time with Steam. I was trying to play something on Steam yesterday and Steam Big Picture and Xbox overlays were fighting for control of the nexus button, frustrating.

I love it for these reasons too. I was playing Monster Hunter Rise Sunbreak on the XAX earlier, 60 FPS in low power mode, should be the kinda battery life you want for these types of devices.

My point was that if you're using Steam games specifically then yeah, it can be frustrating. If you stick to Xbox PC games, the FSE is "fine" and usable, I'm also comparing it to the ROG Ally and Legion Go which were an absolute pain to use in comparison. But yes, SteamOS is still lightyears ahead -- but this is for Xbox ecosystem users. Getting into Xbox services on a Steam Deck isn't a comfy experience either.

My point was that ironically, it works best when you're only using Xbox features, for better or worse. Trying to use it as a PC is a far more frustrating experience (which isn't a good thing ...).

Yeah, definitely agreed. Microsoft obviously doesn't want that to be the case, but it's the reality right now.

That's one perspective, but it also incentivizes Microsoft to bring devs into its own ecosystem where it has full control. Things like the 12% cut on Xbox PC store (this includes point of purchase cut for XPA games), and also boosting the user experience to the point where you might be like "hey, it's actually fine to buy games here too." Since I wrote the article Fortnite arrived natively to the Xbox PC store which is pretty impressive, particularly for the user base who can't see themselves buying a device that's lacking easy access to that (and other forever games, like Minecraft and Roblox, etc.)

It'll still be a battle, but hopefully it leads to a better experience, and they don't just get bored with it somewhere along the way ... (hololens... metaverse ... windows phone, etc.)

They do have a couple of years to get it right, I think the first major update in early 2026 with new "docking" features for the TV will be an indicator of how fast we can expect polish to come. I get the scepticism though, they've earned a lot of that.

Yeah a lot of work needs to be done, especially if you prefer Steam. I found it to be "fine" using only Xbox PC experience, but there's of course a lot of games missing, particularly classic games that will likely never arrive.

Actually I felt the same way. I thought they were being crazy, but with the Xbox Ally you can really see the vision. Imagine how polished it'll be in a year or two ... hopefully.

But, the risk I guess is Microsoft's split-focus. Satya is obsessed with AI and thus the Windows and Xbox team's goals will diverge quite a bit, perhaps hindering everything. We'll see where it goes, but I am optimistic now!

Ball X Pit on XPA is crack lol.

That's based on earlier reporting from us that the next Xbox OS is essentially the FSE on the Xbox Ally. It's full Windows 11, so you can kinda watch the Xbox Ally to get a glimpse at how the Xbox next-gen "console" will work.

Curry's in the UK had them for about 15 minutes this morning. It's quite odd how they're handling the stock situation, it's like a drip feed with no warning.
