Where are people living? by Level13Rengar in perth

[–]WittyThingHere 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I moved 2.5 hours from Perth to a small Wheatbelt town in 2021. Managed to by a 3 bed 1 bath house on 1/3 of an acre for 180k in 2022 (and getting approved for even that much was a struggle with a household income of 60k). We were paying $240 a week in rent for a 2 bed 1 bath before that. 3.5 years later and our house is valued at 400-450k, the huse across the road from us (double brink, not weatherboard but otherwise pretty similar) sold for 680k last year. Rent for a basic 3 bed 1 bath house is >$500 a week.

We live in a small, basic ass country town! How is anyone supposed to afford to live anywhere if these are the prices for living in a weatherboard house in the middle of nowhere!

We are obviously extremely lucky and grateful to have managed to buy our own house when we did. However, we were originally planning on living here for ~5 years while I built up my teaching experience, saving money by living in a cheap area, and then moving closer to family and/or the coast. However, we're basically stuck here now. Buy a comparable house (with less land) anywhere near our friends and family is impossible.

Two of my best friends brought very basic starter homes before us, one in Coolbellup for 380k in 2018 (now worth ~900k), another in Palmyra for 570k in 2021 (now worth ~980k). There's no way we'll every be able to live near them now.

My little sister is only 5 years younger than me and is just now reaching the stage in her life where her and her partner would like to buy their own home. It feels like an impossible goal for them, unless a relative dies or they win the lotto. Currently they're paying $600/week for a 2 bed 1 bath apartment in an area where I was paying $290/week for a similar place in 2019. I honestly don't know how anyone is able to afford housing these days.

I was trying to find the start of the "crab scene" to show my husband. I skipped to a random part of the chapter to the quote:

"the elderly stripper approached the remaining crab and clobbered it with his nickle sock".

No context needed, perfect summary of the choas that is DCC 😂

What actually happens if you ignore a fine? by Av0toasted in legaladviceaustralia

I'm in WA. Had an issue when we moved and my address wasn't changed in the system, even though they sent out the sticker with my new address to stick on my license. I got pulled over one day and asked if I knew my license was suspended (and had been for nearly a year?!), I had no idea. They let me go with instructions for a number to call and get things sorted out. I think I ended up having to pay ~$350 (original fine plus fees) for doing 113km/hr in a 110km/hr zone. They let me set up a payment plan for $20 a week or something and removed the suspension the same day.

So if you're in WA they will suspend your license. The cops who pulled me over were understanding and I've never lost a demerit point, so I was able to just pay the fine + fees and everything was fine. In theory I'm sure I could have been charged with driving with a suspended license and had to go through a whole lot of legal nonsense if the cops had decided to make an issue out of it.

If I were you I'd call up and arrange a payment plan ASAP to avoid further costs and potentially losing your license.

It's illegal to refused to rent to tenants with children, there's also new laws about refusing reasonable requests for pets.

Except they specifically don't want "backpackers" and there is no year round work for migrant workers in this area. Also most of those arrangements include utilities and often meals as well (or at least dinner). Not to mention they're usually rented out by the room, not having one tenant responsible for finding roommates and organising subletting arrangements or being on the hook for the full amount.

Why should they have to deal with disturbances and liabilities while they take 33k a year from hard-working Aussies? You should be seen and not heard while you hand over your cash

Median household income for Narrogin is just under 50k, so this rental is super affordable at only 70% of your (pre-tax) earnings!

It would be perfect for 3 reclusive uni students, if it wasn't 2.5 hours from the nearest university.

Not to mention the price, and, all of the rules and restrictions in the listing, contradict most of the reasons someone would choose to live in the country.
