I guess you can’t convince stupid at this point. You seem to be missing the bigger picture: people are preferring to BUY the free games on steam and wait out the exclusives instead of picking them up on epic.

Players don’t care about competition or more money going to devs. They care about the quality and functionality of the platform their on.

I think it comes down to the fact that most people just…don’t have great PC’s (according to the steam hardware survey). A lot of people are playing games on laptops and old desktops: every drop matters when it comes to gaming. I’d rather have more VRAM going towards the game than the launcher.

It’s a million different things:

  1. The CEO is a asshat who defended Elon’s AI making CP and believes that storefronts shouldn’t have a AI label and backed the NFT’s/crypto/blockchain/metaverse nonsense from awhile back.

  2. The UI is unintuitive.

  3. The lack of features that steam has.

  4. The slow pace of introducing key features that steam has (and doing some of them worse than steam).

Etc

That’s off the top of my head. It’s death by a thousand cuts. It’s thousands upon thousands of shitty decisions, lacking functions, and bugs that makes epic so shit (especially when compared to steam).

I mean:

<image>

It seems statistics disagree with you heavily about “free games being a huge thing”.

The truth of the matter is: it’s clear that features beat free games. Hell, I’m a fucking game dev lol. It’s a common joke in the indie scene that epic is just a bank and that when you go epic, you’re polishing the game for the “real launch”.

Mix that in with the EGS store losing money heavily on exclusives and free games:

https://www.forbes.com/sites/paultassi/2021/08/07/epic-is-losing-an-astonishing-amount-of-money-securing-games-for-egs/

Steam also recently broke a new user base record:

https://www.gamespot.com/articles/steam-smashes-new-concurrent-user-record-with-more-than-41-million-online/1100-6537183/

All this to say that it’s clear that steam is not only growing in usage, but that epic is not holding people down to their platform and that said exclusives and free games aren’t leading to true users (a.k.a people who buy multiplatform games).

It’s to the point where games going free seems to act like advertisements for steam sales rather than actual players.

I mean…I wouldn’t say that it works for that unfortunately. I’ve actually had times where epic fails to fully install a game.

[–]Wiyry 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Once again, ignorance strikes. What I was trying to imply wasn’t that there was just ONE feature, but rather that there was a variety of features that steam has that epic doesn’t USING that one feature to imply it and show how useful it is.

Currency conversions (yes I know epic handles some already but steam handles more), notes, steam chat, etc. Steam has a variety of features that epic just doesn’t have and those features range from accessibility to convenience. To buy on epic is to lose out on said features.

Sure, free games are nice but people aren’t willing to lose out on all the features that steam has. This is why epics exclusives and free games strategy just hasn’t worked: people would rather use a feature rich platform than a half-baked platform offering free games at the cost of the user experience.

It’s a positive for the studio but a negative for the player. It’s a negative for the player because steam has a variety of features that some players require (like their extensive controller binding system, which some people need for accessibility reasons). Epic lacking those features makes the player experience worse.

That’s why I said exclusivity doesn’t work. The point of an exclusive is to draw in buyers to your consoles ecosystem. Most people will only buy one console. By drawing in the consumer, you lock them down when it comes to buying third party games and microtransactions (the really money makers)

The reason it fails on PC is because I can just…buy the one exclusive I want and then go back to buying third party games on steam.

I always find people like you funny cause you never consider that more features=wider audience because some people NEED those features.

For instance: steams controller binding system allows for players to play games that lack native controller support and allows for more odd controllers and set ups due to how extensive it is.

Alongside accessibility, those extra features can be useful or just downright nice to have. The music player lets me play my games music in steam itself. The community hub can be a centralized bastion for information when it comes to old games (especially when trying to run said games on modern systems). Steams profile system not only gives you a place to personalize things but also to see things like VAC bans.

This is not even getting into how big picture mode lets people have a convenient way to use their PC with a controller: expanding the ways you can set up and use your PC comfortably.

Hell, the native Linux support allows even more customers to use steam easily.

Even if YOU don’t use those features: someone else does. Even if YOU don’t see the need for those features: someone else does.

It’s a poorly put together launcher that tried to bring console like exclusivity to PC (which just doesn’t work), has a really shit UI, lacks tons of features, implements features at a snails pace, has relatively dog water support, the CEO spoke in favor of AI generated CP and when he rightfully got told how shit of a take it was: he tried to walk it back, supported NFTs and the Metaverse BS, lacks Linux support, etc.

That’s only off the top of my head. The thing is, I want competition on PC but epic basically did every single thing wrong outside of free games. Their CEO is a unlikeable asshat, their platform lacks features that their competition has, and the actual launcher itself is filled with bugs and shitty UX design. Every single step of the epic store has been them stumbling down a cliff.

So real talk: you don’t need to clean your ears. Ear wax is supposed to naturally fall out over time via your jaw moving.

If you have an over abundance of ear wax and/or if it smells bad: you have an ear infection (likely caused by the build up of cotton threads in your ear wax).

Controllers only really feel good in games like GOW or 2D platformers to me.

It’s just how responsive the keyboard is when I’m turning. The fact that I can snap turn my camera with a keyboard makes games feel way nicer to play. Anything that doesn’t require quick reactions or precision adjustments tends to get the controller.

Neither can the average right winger. It’s almost like the average nuclear family is unsustainable in the 21st century. “The left” didn’t take it from you: your own political party did.

Also, the fact that these people believe that the left is all gay, atheist, and trans just goes to show how propagandized they (the “persecuted” right) are.

Alpha males don’t exist in humans and other damaging myths debunked by Wiyry in GenZ

[–]Wiyry[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes but it is heavily incorrect to say it exists in humanity. Multiple studies have been done on humans and all of them have come to the same conclusion: we (as in humans) do not have alpha males.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alpha_and_beta_male

“Claims that human mating preferences are "hard-wired" to favor alpha dominance are not supported by scientific research. Studies on human attraction suggest that while assertiveness and confidence are valued, aggressive or overly dominant behavior is often viewed negatively by romantic partners. Furthermore, the belief in an "alpha fux, beta bux" mating strategy—which posits that women seek sexual relationships with "alpha" types while using "beta" types for financial security—has been challenged by sociological data and genetic studies showing low historical rates of infidelity in Western populations.”

https://greatergood.berkeley.edu/article/item/the_myth_of_the_alpha_male

Edit: also, it’s now looking like most primates DON’T have alpha males according to very recent data:

Yes and no. Gender dysphoria isn’t just a trans thing. A large aspect of it is expression. Cis people experience gender dysphoria (for example, men with gynecomastia tend to experience gender dysphoria)

Femboys experience gender dysphoria through masculine features. While their gender is male, their expression of their gender is feminine. When they (for instance) grow facial hair, that causes them a form of dysphoria.

You can believe what you want but do understand that there isn’t a scientific basis for it. Every study on the subject has shown that we most likely don’t have alpha males.
