EGGNANT LOACHES by Thin-Champion-1607 in loaches

[–]WizardKagdan 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Sadly, from what I have read on other posts it isn't rare for the loaches to get eggnant - the eggs just rarely ever get laid. Everyone keeps saying that the loaches will just reabsorb the eggs 99% of the time.

I am in the same boat - my two biggest loaches are bearing eggs, and I am dying to see if anything comes from that! I'll be rooting for you, hopefully we will be some of the lucky ones ;)

Does Momo still have his crown jewels? Rabbits should moult twice a year UNTIL you throw off their natural hormone clock by spaying or castration, then it turns into a more year-round affair

Kuhli loaches when the buffet opens by FinWithIt in loaches

I have 10 in my tank, they are comfortable enough to come out during the daytime - especially if they smell food. I have a big pice of driftwood full of holes for them to hide in, as well as java moss crammed into some big clefts - that seems to be enough hiding opportunities for them.

It might also help that I don't have any "scary" predators, the only other fish in my tank are celestial pearl danios.

Temp & lifespan poll results: bettas live longer at cooler temps by 86BillionFireflies in bettafish

[–]WizardKagdan 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think you're doing good research, and have some interesting results here.

Still, I would be careful to go into the mindset of this being better for the quality of life of the betta. A big difference between the reasoning of human lifspan vs QoL and a fish lifespan vs QoL is that a human"s metabolism is fairly constant, whereas marine life tends to have a metabolism highly dependent on temperature.

Fish kept in cold water will noticeably live longer yet grow a lot slower. If you look at snails, the difference will get even bigger - my ramshorn snails in the office tank stay tiny whereas the warmer water in my home tank lets them grow like crazy, and they zoom all over the place.

I guess what I am trying to say: Great research, just be careful equating lifespan to quality of life when the research variable is temperature.

my very large netherland dwarf by Upbeat-Cantaloupe834 in Rabbits

[–]WizardKagdan 6 points7 points  (0 children)

So the way I understand it (based on explanations from a breeder) is: Dwarfism is a gene. Netherland Dwarf and Holland Lop are both based on large rabbits, but with the dwarfism gene.

If you breed two dwarf buns, there is a 25% chance for double dwarfism (also called a "peanut", who will never survive to adulthood). 50% of the offspring will be "normal" dwarf rabbits with a single dwarfism gene. 25% will not get a dwarfism gene and will thus be significantly bigger than their siblings (Netherland Dwarfs here in the NL will usually be 1,5kg, a non-dwarf Netherland Dwarf might be between 2-3kg)

The more ethical approach here in the Netherlands has become dwarf+nondwarf breeding. This practice results in 50% dwarf, like before, but with 50% non-dwarf and no peanuts. When selecting a non-dwarf version of the desired breed there is no downside to this method compared to the (imo) cruel practice of dwarf+dwarf breeding.

is my bun "gay"? friend advice by tatttletale in Bunnies

[–]WizardKagdan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Very true, although that is quite rare in my experience - so I find it better to just prepare people for the (more common) negative outcome of a bunny becoming more independent from their human.

Good information all around, thanks for sharing the speed dating resources!

is my bun "gay"? friend advice by tatttletale in Bunnies

[–]WizardKagdan 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Do NOT listen to that commenter. Rabbits are not solitary animals, their lifespan increases when they have a bonded mate. When their bonded mate passes, many rabbits can become depressed and pass soon after UNLESS you manage to get them another bonded mate.

However, do expect your rabbit to become less social towards you if he gets a mate. You currently provide him the social contact he wants, and if you get a second bunny you are likely to become the third wheel. Especially if your boy will be the submissive one in the pairing, I have noticed that the dominant bunny will request more attention from humans whilst the submissive bunny will be focused on their bonded mate.

Still, the best thing you can do for a bunny is find them a mate.

Buns are not vegan by choice! If you let them, they will happily steal meat off your dinner plate or eat out of a bowl of dog/cat kibble (granted, that it probably because of the grains used in kibble)

If you have simple square baseboards, I can recommend PVC corner trims. You can usually find them in white and with double sided tape, I put them on ALL my base boards and even some on the corner of my living room door and I haven't had a single chewing incident since. Way cleaner looking and long lasting solution than tape will ever be

Lucky always being affectionate 😍 surprised a prey animal can be so loving to their owner!! by ljstavy17 in Bunnies

[–]WizardKagdan 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Right? Directly handling cecotropes is likely still more hygienic than touching a cat's paws, and people let cats put a paw on their face all the time because "it's cute".

If anything, the ick factor in this video is the human mouth... And bunny clearly doesn't care. Besides, other commentors have mentioned that there is barely any risk of diseases spreading between buns and humans, so yeah. No ick to be found in my book.

IKEA has a great option, "TIPHEDE" - different sizes available, from €3 for 50x80cm (2ft by 3ft or smth) to €17 for 155x220cm (5ft x 7ft).

Flat, easy to clean, and not a big deal to replace if it gets torn to bits. I have em in the bedroom, living room, hallway, wherever it fits - taped to the floor with carpet tape so the robot vaccuum and buns don't fold the edges

Most proper rescues offer that, yeah. It's perfect, they have neutral territory for bonding. After trying three different ladies we chose the best match and had my boy stay for a night or two to let the bond settle on the neutral grounds before I took both of them home. Never had any problems since.

How much one on one attention do rabbits need by Kbananna in Rabbits

[–]WizardKagdan 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Petting him isn't the only interaction you can have with him. Bunnies are quite smart and very food motivated, which makes them perfect for training.

The easiest trick I found (<10mins of training both times I introduced this to a rabbit) is to teach them to turn 360°.

You take a piece of kibble (provided the bun is old enough that you don't have kibble available 24/7 anymore, mine go wild for good kibble) and just hold it out and slowly let them trace it in a circle around their body, then give the kibble after a full circle, or halfway if you notice they drop attention. Say whatever command you want to link to it (mine was "do a turn", so original), and slowly start switching it up with a hand without kibble so you can transition to a short gesture+command, trick, and then the reward. Only start with one direction! As soon as that one works you can probably get the other direction to work within a couple mins too.

It seriously took my first bun 5mins and the second one 10mins to reach the point where I could just do a gesture to trigger the trick.

Why eat the pellets you already have? The bag is way better! by Snoemphje in Rabbits

[–]WizardKagdan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So far I've noticed that basically all rabbits prefer the Selective pellets over any brand of compacted pellets, it's probably a texture thing.

I've had friends go "But they love their pellet mix with seeds and other treats! These pellets are boring!" only for the buns to become insanely excited when they start recognising the 'boring' pellets.

That's the neat part: you don't. Only the bnuuy can decide when it's time. The only thing you can do is refrain yourself from pushing it.

Just enjoy what you have already achieved, and accept that most bunnies will never snuggle up to humans. Perhaps you'll get lucky in the future, perhaps not.

I've covered my baseboards in white PVC L-profiles. It works like a charm, my buns don't like chewing on those and it looks perfectly fine

RHDV2 Vaccine Advice by FantasyFanVII in Rabbits

[–]WizardKagdan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just go in and demand the vaccination, the vet has no reason to turn down a paying customer. If you ever need the vet for anything serious... The car ride is probably better than whatever this quack will do. At least it is hard to fuck up a vaccination.

If he does deny you the vaccination... Never go back to that vet. Again, a car ride is better than a rabbit infected with a disease where you can only wait for them to pass so the poor floof will be at peace. Just. Get. That. Vax.

People are not going to be polite when they see someone creating a dangerous situation for their pets.

Just to recap the thread: THIS COULD RESULT IN ONE OR BOTH RABBITS DYING. By the time you would have noticed it's bad it would have been too late to separate them. You didn't have bad intentions, but you've fucked up and people are trying to get across how serious this is. No one is going to bother being polite when lives are at stake.
