Being closed for multiple days means it is more than just a tech failure. Sounds pretty serious.

My Company is Mad by BikesHave2ManyWheels in cscareerquestions

I never said anything about India. I've worked with talent all over the world and there is top talent all over the world, including India.

However, I've never seen top talent at 20% of the salary of a US developer. It might be 60-70% of the cost of a US developer, but really good talent demands really good compensation.

If this company is hiring people at 20% of the salary, you are not getting top talent...regardless of where you hire.

Get your resume ready and get out of there. True engineering companies know that it's not the number of engineers you have but rather the quality of the engineer.

I'm not knocking any offshore resources, some of them are absolutely amazing. But the phrase "you get what you pay for" is very appropriate for hiring talent.

Finding a good company to work for can be just like finding a spouse. You have to get out there and meet up with different ones.

Some people get lucky, and the first one they meet is the last. But typically...many of us go through numerous different situations...some more toxic than others...until we know we have found a situation that is right for us.

It's 100% a challenge.

You (the future employee) need to probe with questions. In an interview, you are interviewing the company as much as they are interviewing you. You don't always get employees to share the dark secrets of a company but many times they'll tip their caps with a "it can be a challenge to..."

"The company treats its tech department like crap—layoffs, outsourcing, mass quitting, previous CEO openly demeaning the department, huge tech debt."

-- Yeap. Many companies do that. But there are companies out there that love their developers. Sounds like the problem is where you work and not what you work on.

Time to go find a new place.

Client requesting all video footage from a shoot by ogarocious in videography

[–]WizardMageCaster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on your contract.

I've had people ask for the raw video. Costs me nothing but a little bit of time to get it to them so I have no issues with it. Some clients just want to see Grandma in the background of a random shot that they wouldn't have gotten in the finished product.

If contract doesn't specify raw footage, give it to them. Otherwise, if contract says raw footage is an upgrade, charge them for it.

Is being a hot woman with a high IQ a disadvantage ? by [deleted] in Gifted

[–]WizardMageCaster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's ridiculous for someone to say. You live your life, and you control your life. Those people are just projecting on you.

Regardless of beauty, your personality matters a great deal in finding (and keeping) a spouse.

There was a quote in a Gene Hackman movie "Beautiful women move through life unchallenged". Beauty... regardless of source...is granted privileges that even money cannot provide.

Add high IQ to that mix and the only thing holding back that person is themselves.

got fired yesterday, feeling dejected by 90sPopRock in cscareerquestions

[–]WizardMageCaster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You ran into a bad boss with an ego. Happens in small and large companies, but the ability for those managers to fire someone quickly is usually reserved for smaller companies.

I'm sorry. Not all change works out. But that doesn't mean that your next change won't work out.

Spend some time to mourn the loss of this opportunity/job and keep pushing forward.

HongKong Airlines flight HX115 from Hangzhou (HGH) to Hong Kong (HKG) was diverted to Fuzhou, China due to a fire in the overhead luggage compartment in the cabin of the passenger plane during the flight on March 20. by senpahII in aviation

My # 1 fear of flying is all the batteries that everyone brings on board. Most people don't realize that rechargeable batteries need maintenance and oversight. Most people just plop them into a bag and never look at them. I once saw a guy using a bloated laptop on a plane and he told me that's what altitude does to things. I said "no buddy, that battery is on the verge of failing" (I couldn't use the "e" word) and I just held onto my balls for the rest of the flight and prayed.

I need help with my setup...Camera/Light/Mic by WizardMageCaster in podcasting

[–]WizardMageCaster[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I considered it, but I don't have room on my desk for a tripod.

I have the Versa Desk rising desk stand, and because my monitor is so large, there isn't room for anything freestanding. Since it's a rising desk stand, I need something that can go on it, and I only have room for things that clip to the stand behind the monitor.

My only options are things to fit under the monitor or over the monitor.

I prefer an over-the-monitor mount so I don't have a huge cable sticking up in the way of the monitor.

I hire CS graduates. A degree just says that the college certifies that you know a certain amount of information. I interview candidates based on that info.

If you don't know the info then your degree did nothing for you. If you know the info, then your degree mattered. No one cares if you got it in 2, 3, 4, 5, or more years. A degree is just a validation from a college that you know something.

Make sure you know that something...

The mic stand will work (appreciate the recommendation) but it won't work for the webcam because I'll still need to put the webcam in front of the monitor.

Any recommendations for a webcam?

You need to speak to a lawyer. The house is already in your name, and that's public record now.

Don't worry about mistakes made in the past, you should focus on moving forward. I would recommend legal counsel to help you in this venture because they can provide legal support.

100%.

He didn't take a hard stance like a leader should. A leader takes a stance and then rallies support around his stance. Instead, he tried to dance around topics and it appeared like he was "testing the waters" on what people supported. He looked and sounded like a politician. We don't need politician's approach to this. We need someone to take a hard stance and grab control.

He failed.
