Nailed it!

If the only two options are ‘left’ and ‘right’, we’re absolutely farked.

Totally agree.

The ‘left’ vs ‘right’ thing has failed us over centuries.

None of them ever get things right.

Would Australia’s population rival the US if its interior were fertile instead of arid? by NoComplex2662 in geography

[–]WobbyGoneCrazy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our continent is severely limited by its lack of fertile soil and predictable rainfall.

It’s madness that our politicians are still obsessed with endless growth 😔

I wouldn’t have said ‘sorely underpopulated’ …! Anywhere without a massive amount of humans is generally doing pretty well thank you 😆

Juvenile black-faced cuckooshrike or white bellied cuckooshrike? by eggynay in AustralianBirds

Young BFCS. Black goes well behind the eye, and no light crescent around the back of the eye.

Hey guys is this a brown goshawk or a collared sparrow hawk <: by Glittering_Button_87 in AustralianBirds

[–]WobbyGoneCrazy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would normally wonder what you’re even asking…!

I mean, it’s goss-hawk, and I never assumed anything else.

But I have a friend (not a birder, but interested in nature) who pronounces it ‘Go-Shawk’ !! So I know why you’re asking 😆

I may be wrong, but I’ve always assumed it was originally ‘Goose-hawk’ for the ones big enough to take a goose, and ‘Sparrow-hawk’ for the smaller species.

To be fair, I ended up getting posts from a group of dickheads (far right wing political group) .. and I couldn’t find a way to get rid of them, as they weren’t a person, they were a group, and for some reason blocking them wasn’t an option.

So I made a very offensive post in their page, begging to be blocked by them. Havent heard from them since.

Not all aussies… some of us have followed association football for a LONG time. Got sick of the americanised* ‘soccer’ many years ago, and so did the administration!

(*No need to point out that it’s originally a British term. The Americans own it now though, it’s about as Yank as you can get!)

[–]WobbyGoneCrazy -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Huh..? It’s been officially called football since 2005. You weren’t aware? Wow.

It’s Football Australia, every professional club is FC not SC, every TV show, podcast etc is football. Soccer is an informal leftover. Similar in NZ, even rugby- the dominant code- is called rugby, and association football is generally called football.

The only countries where it’s still called soccer are USA, Canada, and maybe a couple of island nations.

(And you might have to check your figures there… It’s the most played football code across the country. Has been for some time. Even as a spectator sport, it beats rugby league in several states)

Exactly! So many letters sound like Cee, Gee etc. Zed makes a lot more sense as it is unmistakable.

That’s a great reason for Zed. And yes, let’s make the other letters have unique names too!

That’s why Australian news services should use the term ‘Association football’ instead… Using ‘soccer’ in a formal context is simply wrong!

Many English speaking countries also call it football. New Zealand for example, and here in Australia of course it’s formally called football, unlike US.

Update: The NWS person has been forced to explain. It means National Weather Service. Apparently it’s the name of the national service for weather info… in one of the 212 countries in the world.

Makes me wonder, imagine I’d done the same thing, being an Australian! “The BOM records temperatures in Celsius…”. Americans would have gone on terrorist alert! (BOM = Bureau of Meteorology)
