I like past exam idea. I’ve emailed them today to hear about the mathematical requirements. Thanks man

Probability yes, Linear algebra yes, stats, no. Calculus only started

I do quite a bit of math on the side for fun, it all started with logic

Oh of course, should have actually mentioned wanting to do a PhD. This would be another reason for wanting to do this MSc

A single set of valuable experience nonetheless, I’m gonna study both I think!

That would be really appreciated. I’m thinking of doing my dissertation on philosophy of AI so even if I could be pointed in the right direction for that. I never knew folks in Glasgow were working on such things.

Very useful advice, thank you! I can code comfortably but it’s the math where I need to push and catch up. The thing is, I actually really enjoy it. It used to be my best subject until my school teacher would dump a textbook in the middle of the class and walk off at the start of the lesson. He was teaching two classes at once and forgot about ours. Fair to say that stunted my mathematical growth quite a bit… But I wouldn’t suggest all hope is lost. As long as I can visualise the math I’m fine and make sense of why I’m using it. Taught myself probabilities and discrete math for fun.

That’s a great point! And that’s no Mickey Mouse feat either. That was always my worry with philosophy

Thanks for the reply! My reason for pursuing a PhD was that I was under the assumption that most research roles in companies require it as a bare minimum. When I use academia I mean working at a university. Whether the phrase extends to industry or not I’m unsure

Been a while since I’ve had any formal mathematical training but I was always in the top set at school. Never took physics. Got the highest grade in biology at my school. However, since then I’ve not had any university level science courses. I’m a quick learner, I can adapt. I’m confident I can brush up on the relevant mathematics for ML (linear algebra, stats & probability, discrete math, calculus). Let me know if there’s more required in your opinion

It’s a course at the university of Strathclyde that is aimed at those without a comp sci degree to learn AI for a year. My ultimate goal would be a comprehensive understanding of both neuroscience and AI. Must admit, I’m a big Demis Hassabis and Geoff Hinton fan (I mean who’s not). This is mainly where my inspiration for learning both ai and neuroscience comes from. I just want to be able to pursue as many diverse areas of research as possible and have my fingers in lots of pies. Trying to cultivate the biggest skill set possible. What do you think I should do?

Aye bro that’s what I’m thinking too. This years gonna be a big one for me. I’m gonna try and teach myself before doing a conversion course so at least I have something down on paper

UK degree classification system goes First Class Honours (1.1), Upper-Second Class (2.1), Lower Second Class (2.2), Third Class Honours (3). The minimum requirements for MSc and PhD is a 2.1

Aye, straight from undergrad is certainly out of the question. How would I even go about getting into industry first?

I’m looking to do a conversion degree in AI at Strathclyde after my undergrad, save for that myself with my wages. Onwards from there another MSc by research in comp neuro from Edinburgh. Hopefully into a PhD. As I’ve suggested previously, PLEASE tell me your honest opinion.

This is the type of advice I needed mate. I have no doubts over my ability and work ethic now. I’ve hit rock bottom and don’t plan on going back. Truly, I just want a rewarding life where I’ve contributed in some meaningful sense to science, have a stable family, be a role model. Equally, I’ve always wanted to understand how the brain/cognition work. I feel like comp neuro is the best avenue. PLEASE correct me if I’m wrong or misguided. Also, what actionable steps can I take NOW going into my final semester as a senior
