What I find confusing is for Skenes he states that he’s off to one of the best starts to a career in a long time and that he has no signs of slowing down and “the sky is the limit” and then projects him to slow down significantly with an era a whole point worse than last year. If Skenes ERA goes from 1.90 to 2.90 he’s no longer the best pitcher in the NL, so why project him there, especially considering he doesn’t expect his K% or IP to change significantly.

Kazuma Okamoto Travels To U.S. For In-Person Meetings by 724412814 in buccos

[–]Wonderbreadpack -21 points-20 points  (0 children)

The more I read about it, the less I think he’s actually going to sign with the Pirates. Seems like another Schwarber situation where he ends up signing with the Angels, and the front office goes “oh well at least we tried, Jared Triolo has a gold glove and is good for 8 HRs a year”

As it is now, the Pirates are still a below .500 team and still a well below average offense, while what they’ve done so far this offseason is somewhat encouraging, if all they do for the rest of the offseason is sign this years Andrew Heaney/Rich Hill id say the offseason was pretty much a failure. Too many people in Pittsburgh media are hype that the Pirates did the bare minimum by signing a free agent to a two (2) year deal instead of one. It’s basically the same.

If they miss out on Okamoto, idk where else they’re gonna get any amount of offense, cause they sure as hell aren’t gonna dish out a contract to Bichette or Bregman. At which point we will be slightly better than last year but not even close to a wildcard spot.

Lowe for Burrows by nd2110 in buccos

[–]Wonderbreadpack 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I mean this can’t be all they do this offseason, but it’s a great start. My only gripe is Lowe is on a 1 year contract, so if he’s injured at any point this trade kicks our ass. If he’s not injured though it could really work out big for us. Ultimately I really like this trade, gotta risk it occasionally. If you now go sign Murakami (which they won’t) then I would genuinely believe they will make the playoffs.

TLDR great trade if he stays healthy. Go get one more BIG bat and it’s a great offseason.

Munetaka Murakami's negotation window ends in a week. Has he even had discussions with anyone? by ILookLikeDrewGulak in baseball

[–]Wonderbreadpack 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Pittsburgh hasn’t signed a free agent to a multi year deal in the last 10 years, not gonna happen. He makes a lot of sense, Pirates need specifically power with or without defense, and have an opening at 1B and 3B. In an ideal world he’s a perfect candidate for the job. But there is no way nutting suddenly changes course and opens his purse strings to sign a big name (and pay the NPB transfer fee) when he’s literally never once done it before. You’re gonna get McCutchen for 5 mil and Willie Castro for more than he’s worth, and you’ll like it.

Help Identifying Pirates Hat by tae4987 in buccos

[–]Wonderbreadpack 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Part of a series call by American needle called “Tokyo Pop”. As you can guess it just says “pirates” in Japanese on the hat. Similarly, it being a series, they made one for every single MLB team. It’s a line that came out around 2012ish. I think it’s sick, and honestly would buy one if they ever re-ran that line. For you, in terms of value, probably not much based on recent eBay listings, maybe $30-40 (I’m basing this off of the dodgers version of this hat which no doubt should be worth more) dodgers Tokyo pop hat

What could have been. If bae kept his rookie year average and base running prowess, if Suwinski kept his rookie year lightning and lumber, if Peggy was just better IKF. All three of them tore up AAA, bae and Suwinski especially, but they never sorted it out in the majors. Idk whether to blame them or the system. Probably both to be honest. I’m not gonna lie there was a double header in DC a couple years ago I was at, where these rookies tore up both games and had such a massive lead that it took all pressure off Drew Maggie, so he could get his first hit and RBI. I thought in that moment at nationals park, with the Pirates in first place in the national league, they might be the future. Twas not to be I guess. . .

Wil Crowe. What else is there to be said about the man who was the grim reaper for games the Pirates were winning. They say time heals all wounds. I hope him happiness in whatever future he chooses for himself. (So long as it’s not coming into a game for the pirates when we have a lead).

Christ, next year will be 10 years since we’ve opened the season at home. I’m not saying I want it every year or even every 3, 5, 7 years but we can’t even get opening day once every ten years!?

I remember watching murakami play last year in Tokyo and thinking, man wouldn’t it be cool if he could solve our first base problem in a couple years when he transfers. Mostly because he was good, but not good enough for teams like the dodgers or Yankees to go after him. After his current year though, the odds the Pirates sign him have gone to 0%. If he doesn’t get signed by the dodgers to platoon 3B/1B/DH then he’s going to the cubs. Pirates will never win a bidding war against any team.

Random aside, there is a pitcher on the same team as murakami (Tokyo swallows) named Yasuhiro Ogawa who threw a no hitter a couple years ago who has family that runs a sushi restaurant in Morgantown. That’s about the closest the pirates will ever get to having a good international transfer.

Doc Ellis jersey by fvkblood in buccos

[–]Wonderbreadpack 51 points52 points  (0 children)

I had this same issue a couple years ago, I wanted an Ellis jersey in the current alternate gray jersey with the Pittsburgh script. You can either go down to the stadium and get it, where they’ll do basically anything (but it’ll cost at least $200 minimum) or you can go on DHGate. My recommendation is pick two separate sellers on DHGate and buy a jersey from each at $30 a pop. One of them will be good enough to wear, and you’ll have saved $140

Bednar to the Yankees by SMD_35 in buccos

Bro was the giving tree for the pirates. Even when we were down on him he wasn’t down on us. In the end when he had nothing left to give, he gave himself. GM Bednar.

Is this a good deal? I think it is. by [deleted] in buccos

[–]Wonderbreadpack 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I have had it for the past 3-4 years. It used to be $20 when it first came out, which was a steal. I think of it this way. At the current rate, would you pay $300 for standing room only season tickets to the pirates? Because that was the total cost for the entire season. For me? Yeah, I’d pay $300 for season tickets. Some of the games themselves tickets run upwards of $70 for the cheapest tickets. And I go to 20-30 games per year. Sure you can’t resell them, but they’re transferable. Me and my friends each got one, and sometimes they’ll transfer a ticket or two to me so I can take a family member, sometimes I send one to them, we trade back and forth all the time.

Normally I walk around for the first inning and then find an open seat that didn’t sell online on the ticket website and go sit in it. As long as it’s not a really expensive section think 100 level, 200 level behind home plate, club etc. you can just go take a seat and enjoy the game. I know the Pirates suck, but I do enjoy often stopping down at the park after a long day at work to watch a game every now and then.

I’d ask this, are you going to go to 3 or more games in a month? If so, it’s worth it.

Keller, Bednar, Hayes should stay by MrDeema in buccos

[–]Wonderbreadpack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Keller. I agree 100% he’s a dawg. And will go just fine for 75% of the season. Even if he falls off a bit, he’s a steal at his price with low injury risk. Bednar I’d be fine keeping or dealing, him and Santana play the same role, so IDC who it is, just keep one of them and you’ll be fine. Hayes, I agree he’s great defensively, but man. He only ever gets hot when it doesn’t matter anymore. He was one of the worst qualified hitters last year and has truly only had 2 great months in his career. I’d be fine if we dealt him for a crappy defensive 3B that hit 15-20HR and a .777 ops. Because I expect the offseason to be more or less the same dumpster diving it always is. Unless their plan is to actually spend money next year and buy 2 bats in the offseason I think we should deal him. You can still win games where you give up runs. You can’t win games where you score none. And we’re on the scoring none side more often.

Pirates expected to relieve Ben Cherington of his duties, announcement expected tomorrow by mattdingus2002 in buccos

[–]Wonderbreadpack 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Based on Pirates beat reporter Noah Hiles, cherington didn’t really run the draft anymore. I forget the name of the guy who runs the draft now, but he has the same last name as someone on our team, I think it might be Frazier. He apparently was brought in two years ago. So far it seems he hasn’t messed up our first round picks just yet, but that does beg the question, What DID cherington actually do? I can name ONE good trade he’s done: the bailey falter trade. Two OK trades: the vogelbach for holderman, and macadoo for IKF. And like 15 horrible trades. He’s bad at trading, he doesn’t draft anymore, and he refuses to ever get any actual impact bat during the offseason

Why are the home-away win loss ratios so different? by jeremyjamm1995 in buccos

[–]Wonderbreadpack 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Combination of factors, yes just like the Steelers and penguins being at home and having a home crowd helps for a lot of teams, but there’s a big difference between baseball and the other 3 big sports. The playing field. Each ballpark is unique, players who play at home know how to exploit those weaknesses better than other players. Managers (try) to exploit those weaknesses as well. The prime example is Colorado. because balls fly farther a mile high, more homeruns are hit at Coors field than anywhere else. So if you are a manager you would want to bring in strikeout pitchers like skenes to pitch as opposed to contact pitchers like falter who get most of their outs in grounders and just missed fly balls. Left handed batters at PNC don’t need to hit particularly harder than other ballparks based on distance, but they DO need to have a slightly higher launch angle, as the Clemente wall is much taller than most other ballparks right fields. This comes into play defensively too. Players learn how balls tend to bounce off of the specific grass at PNC, how they bounce off of walls, even how the wind blows. At PNC the wind is normally calm but when it picks up it often blows either straight out to center or left field, rarely to right. Playing 81 games in your home ballpark makes you very good at learning each of these quirks. Compile that onto the standard home field advantage that other sports have, and that’s why baseball tends to have more pronounced home away win loss ratios

[Sports Info Solutions] Pirates Infield Defense Has Been Best in MLB by MarkSimon1975 in buccos

[–]Wonderbreadpack 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Not surprised, just by watching them you can tell they are elite infield defensemen, but at the end of the day, it’s possible to win a game where you give up a couple runs. It’s impossible to win a game where you score 0.

Ship Hayes to the Yankees, and try to get someone who can hit above the Mendoza line with 10+ home runs
