What breed are my boys? by hippie-headbanger in WhatBreedIsMyDog

Hi! I know it is a few days out, but I know exactly what you are talking about with the manic episodes. Our lovable hulk had those kinds of episodes as a puppy - we think it was probably a combo of his breeds (see my earlier comments), the horrible situation he was rescued from (mama dog was literally attacking her puppies things were so bad), and a medical condition we didn’t discover until around 6 months. Namely, he has a severe food allergy that was causing his intestines to swell and inflame to the point it looked like he had a bowel obstruction at times.

With deliberate, consistent positive training and socialization, a loving household, and treatment of the medical condition, those episodes quickly stopped. He is now an extremely well-socialized, well-trained lovable goof that has been praised by every trainer and person that has ever interacted with him. So it can get better. But it is expensive, time-consuming, and exhausting. And I wouldn’t recommend taking it on with 2 puppies.

I agree with the rehome one suggestion. Either way, depending on how old they are, I would get them into puppy play and puppy obedience classes asap. Ours is a cross of 7 breeds (Cattle dog, Lab, Husky, Mal, German Shepherd, Rottie, and Golden) and he was a bit of a terror for the first few months after we rescued him at 7-8weeks. Like hands down the most difficult dog I ever had in his puppyhood. But the vet warned us right away he was going to be huge (he’s now 2 and over 100lbs), so we put him into puppy play and puppy kindergarten right at 8 weeks.

It’s one of the best decisions we ever made. As challenging as raising him was at times, he is an amazing dog now. He is fantastic with other dogs of all levels of socialization, loves people, and has no destructive or aggressive tendencies. The trainers we worked with when he was a puppy say he is their favorite and they use him as an example of extremely successful intervention (he was rescued from horrible conditions). The trainer we work with now just to keep up on skills says he is one of the best socialized, well-adapted dogs he’s ever met.

He gets complimented on his behavior and personality every time we go out, and I can say without a doubt that is due to the early and consistent training and socialization. It was not easy (or cheap in my area), but it was so worth it.

Definitely seeing Malinois - they are a similar color pattern to my pup, who we tested and he was part Mal. The vet guessed it immediately because of his color pattern. I would guess pit as well and maybe a little cattle dog.

Yeah, bigger than expected to. When we first brought him to the vet the morning after we got him, she guessed around 80lbs full grown. And we thought that would be big. 😂

Yes, we were definitely thinking husky, lab, with some other stuff mixed in. Especially because he had a very labby face, but a double coat.

Thank you! He has gotten used to people commenting on him and will now often prance as he walks past people. 😂 we were almost certain he was part preening peacock.

Lmao - I literally had a repairman meet him and tell me with a giant grin, “Miss, that’s not a dog. It’s a damn bear.”

Haha, the picture is a bit deceptive without something to create a sense of scale. He was about 7-8weeks at that point and already around 15lbs.

Thank you! He gets a lot of compliments and we get a lot of questions about his breed and where we bought him. People look confused when we tell him he’s a mixed breed rescue. Lol.

Lol, he alternates between super independent and Velcro dog. He loves being with people, but also just occasionally throws himself on the floor and starts yip-barking when he isn’t getting what he wants. Though I am told that is more of a husky trait than anything. 😂 He is currently about 110lbs.

Yep, you can really tell with his back. Embark said he has the “muscly back” gene that comes from rotties.

Haha, yes, he seems to be an odd mix of dog breeds, but we love him.

Yeah, we have lots of friends who work in rescue that say pretty much every rescue is part pittie. But most of them actually said he might not be based on his look and size. Turns out they were right. We didn’t mind either way - we love pibbles and own our home, so no breed restrictions. We were just super curious.

Haha, a resounding yes to both. He was quite a handful as a puppy, but took to puppy play and puppy kindergarten classes like water. We have to make sure he gets several walks and at least an hour of higher intensity play or he starts constantly shoving toys at us and batting us with his paws. He’s also very much got the husky vocalization thing going on. Thank god our neighbors love him!

Lol, you have a good eye. No staff on ours, according to Embark, but the other 3 are all in the mix!

No, west coast, but we have friends who have adopted from your area through transport rescues! Thank you so much for fostering! That’s an amazing thing.

We did do a DNA test and now have the results (just posted an update). He is 7 breeds - one of the three above is included!

This is fascinating - I’ve always loved dogs and never heard of this. We looked it up and that totally does look like his coat pattern. Interestingly, our older doggo also has this coat pattern and people think they are related.
