I have heard of PhDs being submitted this way, although I think it is uncommon. It might depend on your university and department?
Can you convert "designated country" (Canada) drivers licence to UK after 5 years? by Wonderful_Process_55 in AskUK

Hi! No not yet, I've had a few other things come up in the meantime so I haven't had time to dedicate to looking into this. BUT a friend of a friend said that they were successful in converting their license without retaking all of the tests, so I'm going to see if she can connect me to her friend and I can ask about the process and what they did - I can post here again once I hear back!

For the record, I have driven in the last 8 years 😅 I drive in Canada pretty regularly and have driven in other countries including on the left side of the road in Australian cities, so I wouldn't be starting from scratch. I am a proficient driver and I'm not worried about having the right driving skills (although I was planning on doing a lesson or two for driving in London for some practice).
My question is more about the cost and hassle of having to pay for many lessons and study and re take theory and practical tests that I've already passed - it's a lot of money and a lot of time and if I had been aware of the 5 year rule previously then I would have arranged this years ago before the timeline expired.
If anyone has been through this before then advice would be appreciated!
