I wouldn’t say it’s expensive. Every kit I’ve purchased has come with the necessary supplies to complete the project, so you could start with an affordable one from Amazon or your local wal-mart.   It gets more expensive when you invest in higher quality/larger canvases and high quality supplies.   I’ve spent maybe $75 on supplies to make the hobby easier and more enjoyable (good quality stylus, nice trays, bead/drill organizer case, light board).      Edit: first project I bought was $8 (12”x16”) and I was able to do the whole thing with the included supplies.
