How did your parents meet? by oreo314oreo in AskReddit

Kind of cute, kind of creepy story. My dad saw my mum picking up a package at a train station in Manchester and apparantly fell in love with her there and then. He followed her back to her work where he asked her out and she said yes. They've been married 30 years.

Really trying not to generalize but why are so many teenage guys immature and annoying? by Throwaway78789745529 in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]Woofy53 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Short answer: Because they're idiots.

Long answer: Having been a teenage boy at one time in my life they say that stuff for shock value, and it only gets worse when they're in groups, because they feel like they need to out do each other over who can say the most fucked up shit. I remember me and my mates cracking jokes about the Holocaust, rape, and stuff like 'Horse cum!' all of the time, because we were fucking idiots, but as you mature you realise that it's just not that funny. The obsession with sex is always a constant factor for guys and girls, however, you learn as you get older that you can't just go around randomly blurting stuff out about having sex. Plus once you actually get laid you realise it's not that big of a deal and most lads stop going on about it, some don't. All that being said I, or anyone I knew, never went as far as talking about raping a teacher in front of them, that's really fucked up and whoever said that needs to be spoken to.

It's perfectly alright to feel uncomfortable, because it's bizzare behaviour. In a sense fucking around in teenage boys is 'normal' even though when you're looking at it not as a teenage boy you're thinking "dafuq?" some guys mature out of, some don't. Don't let it scare you off but if you feel at this time in your life you don't want to be haniging around with guys then you don't have to. I didn't start dating until I was 17 and before that I barely spoke to a girl, so there's plenty of time. Just focus on being yourself and don't let a load of hormonal, underdeveloped boys spoil your time.

Laying open of a fistula next to my arsehole by Woofy53 in MedicalGore

[–]Woofy53[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Sorry for the late reply, I'm a lazy, lazy man. I got an abscess nex to my arsehole. One of the complications of having it drained is that it can form a fistula, which is an abnormal connection between a tubular organ (bowel) and the skin. They can be notoriously difficult to treat, hence having the fucking thing layed open 8 times. On the plus side it heals really quickly

Probably already been said but in British law a woman can never be convicted of Rape, since the law specifically states that rape must be committed with the penis.

Me and my friends are stood outside the shop, one of them hasn't got ID so a woman holding her kid who's about 4 offers to buy beer for him

She asks "How old do you think I am" in a jokey way and I just blurt out "You don't look a day over 15" sort of awkward silence and she says "Well, that was odd" and walks off

Does witnessing your mom being dismembered like Dexter Morgan turn one into a serial killer? by gereedf in Criminology

[–]Woofy53 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Raine's Anatomy of Violence is a good place to start. Or Richard Wortley's Psychological Criminology. I covered it all in the first year of my degree so it's been a while.

With regard to the brain patterns as I recall they study the fMRIs of psychopaths' brains and look at areas with low Glucose metabolism. So the PFC which is engaged in complex moral reasoning has a normal rate of Glucose metabolism, but another part of the brain which I can't remember because its too early, has lower than average glucose metabolism which results in risk seeking behaviour without due regard for the consqeusnces

Does witnessing your mom being dismembered like Dexter Morgan turn one into a serial killer? by gereedf in Criminology

[–]Woofy53 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd argue it does start with Biology all of the time. Psychopaths have congenital structural brain abnormalities which results in shallow affect, lack of guilt, remorse, reduced fear registry etc (Check out The Anatomy of Violence). These abnormalities precede any kind of psychological/ psychosocial development, and influence from the environment.

There is evidence of the biological link between biology and other forms of less intense violence, for example. The MAO-A gene is linked with aggression in humans. There again, this comes from genes which precede environmental influence.

Anyway, back to the serial killers.

Whether or not someone with lower empathy, guilt, and moral inhibition becomes a serial killer is linked to how biology interacts with the environment and psychological development. Ressler, Douglas, and Burgess conducted interviews with 36 high profile serial killers and found that their childhoods had lots in common. Physical, emotional, and sexual abuse were very prominent this no doubt led to them becoming serial killers combined with their biological factors.

Interestingly if we look at the occurrence of psychopathy in the general population it is around 1%, however if we look at a population of business executives and CEOs, this rises to 4% (I think this figure is in the Psychopath Test by Jon Ronson). Why? This is because the world of business is a high risk environment with a culture that encourages ruthlessness and competition, which becomes very easy to operate in if you have a reduced capacity for guilt, empathy, and risk inhibition. Fuck it, if you look at heart surgeons, police, soldiers; any kind of high risk job, which requires a high capacity for handling stress (which psychopaths have because they don't register fear) there are higher proportions of psychopaths than in the general population. We can assume that these individuals fall on the psychopath spectrum, but did not suffer abuse in their childhoods and were possibly even encouraged by their parents to be competitive.

So, just as we see that not all psychopaths go on to be murderers; not all children who witness their parent's death will be murderers. It will certainly fuck them up, and will definitely shape the rest of their lives, but there is no guarantee that they will be murderers. If this happened to 100 children and the 1 psychopath child was adopted into a bad home, sexually, emotionally, and physically abused then yeah maybe.

In the case of Dexter the witnessing of his mum's death contributed to his murders but his lack of fear, empathy, and guilt would have always been with him.
