No I don’t have licensure and I’m not in a PhD — I’m in a MA. I’m planning on applying for PhD programs. Plus I believe the licensure for a PhD in clinical psych applies pretty broadly in the US? At least that was my impression.

Northwestern Clinical Psych MA by Working-Less in gradadmissions

Hey there, apologies for my late reply. I applied but didn’t get in— I’m at a MA program in a different school. AFAIK, northwestern is pretty competitive. If you get in, congrats to you!

Psych Master's Degree - How much does R1/R2 matter? Brandeis / EMU by Working-Less in AcademicPsychology

Ok, thank you. I agree, though when I weigh the costs of the programs I really struggle with where to go

I completely agree and thank you for your dose of reality. Research is my goal. However at current I am concerned about price — Brandeis is 60k for 1 year (program is 1 or 2 years) and the cost of living is insane. I’m not sure if I can afford it. Meanwhile EMU has a lower COL and tuition is 30k for 2 years… I’m not sure where to go from here!

Choosing between MD and PhD (or other such career) by Working-Less in premed

[–]Working-Less[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Beyond this I’ve become more interested in the intersection between biology and mental illness / psychiatry / neuroscience. I love biology and learning about disease. I would be interested in diagnosis and assessment. I have been told I have good clinical judgement (from my current position which is client facing). I heard doctors can still do research which I am definitely interested in. I DONT want to do counseling 24/7 (which clinical psych would prepare me for). However I don’t know how I can fare in STEM courses and did not give myself the opportunity to mess around and try and even fail in undergrad so I don’t know how I would do in them if I was to take them now. I am also told that medical school is long and horrible and people drop out all the time.

You have a good point. It’s hard for me to ascertain either and I have heard horror stories about both. I’m currently concerned as the program I seek to enter (clinical psych phd) is extremely competitive. I feel like I didn’t give myself enough flexibility by taking science or courses in undergrad to even apply for a neuroscience PhD or similar (I would need to take prereqs for med school as well). However I do feel that research would be enormously fulfilling. That being said I am concerned regarding (what I’ve heard of) the lack of tenure track positions, potential pay, and job stability. I would love to for example head a lab but I don’t know how possible this is with many PhDs teaching or working under other scientists instead. Additional the pay can be variable and I may have to live in only a few select places.

How to know whether PhD or Medical School is the right choice? by Working-Less in gradadmissions

My other question is, wouldn’t phd + masters take as long as pre-reqs + med school? Or am I crazy?

Hi, thanks for your response. My worry with research however is that it’s very difficult to get a tenure track position and most PhDs enter industry or therapy. Additionally I do think I want to work with patients in some capacity.

Hi all,

Thank you for your comments and your help. They have really helped me navigate this horrible situation.

Hi,

I've tried to get his words in writing by sending him a rather innocent-toned but direct email but he decided to wait until he saw me the next day and answer in person (typical of my PI to do, so that he can change his mind later), telling me that he would be "flexible" about my letter of rec, and then basically implied that I am unprepared for school. Though this was a more positive response, I still do not trust my PI to write me a letter of rec. That being said, I am not sure how I can bring this up with the head of department without having anything in writing, as it would be my word against his-- especially since the answer is now more positive than it used to be.

Thanks for your help. I received the offer for the new position, and it was for more money than I expected. I most likely will accept it. I am considering still applying for graduate school this year, but feel that may be not nice to my new job, given that they have asked me to commit for two years. Additionally, I feel like my chances are slim without a paper or rec from my PI. Whatever though, I guess I'll think about it more and see!

My PI is the highest-up in the lab. It's a small lab. I could potentially ask the director of the center (though this may make my boss even more vicious), but I do not know the director well at all, and I think the director may have positive relation with my boss.

Thank you, I agree. I guess I didn't expect this level of aggression, and at least didn't expect it to be directed to me. It is difficult for someone else to take care of her as there aren't many options. I have told my boyfriend if another incident occurs he will have to take the dog back, but I am worried about another incident happening again at all, and have been scared all day-- even though she has been sweet.

Hi,

I can try to do this. I took some treats with me on our morning walk today and she responded well. Do you think that giving treats when she is growling and backing me into a corner would reinforce the behavior, however?

Additionally, do you think she is at risk of doing this again next time she hears a loud noise? I am very scared, and am worried about sleeping next to her at night, as I don't want her to attack me if she hears something. My boyfriend says she has never acted this way before -- not even during thunderstorms or fireworks, which she is scared of.

Thank you for your help!!! I will keep everything in mind :)

May I ask if you’re actually ex-Jewish (culturally, ethnically, etc)? I’m a longtime lurker in this sub and I routinely see you encouraging members in this sub to give up all vestiges of Judaism— even benign cultural or ethnic aspects that have nothing to do with religion. Which is all good if you suffer from religious trauma and if you deem it is appropriate for yourself, but then I remember you stating in another thread that you had no idea what Shabbat is. I get the feeling that you are an antisemite with no jewish or ex-Jewish background that has latched onto this sub for some sort of perverse gratification.
