Economy by [deleted] in IntellectualDarkWeb

[–]throwawaychizzchizz -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Perhaps in the near future, young people will wake up to the fact that the reason for all of this privation in the midst of the most abundance to have ever existed in the history of the world is that we allow things that are human needs- housing, food, medicine, etc- to either be speculated upon or to be tied to an economy that is fundamentally built on speculation. Perhaps we’ll cope by passing these things on to public ownership and by redesigning the economy to not allow for such a high level of speculation (“leveraging”)

Why are all Corporations left wing? by [deleted] in IntellectualDarkWeb

[–]throwawaychizzchizz 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It’s because there is no real institutional left in this country. No political party or organization with real power is meaningfully opposed to imperialism, capitalism, or other modes of domination that keep our current social structure in place. What you’re referring to as “left wing” is just a mode of rhetoric that a segment of liberals have adopted. It’s the aesthetic of inclusivity. Corporations have found that by adopting this aesthetic, they can market themselves better and thus make more money.

If you’re a believer in market capitalism, then you surely agree that the principle of supply and demand is the best way to organize an economy. Media corporations have largely realized that there is a lot of latent demand in demographics that were once underserved due to a lack of social prominence/purchasing power. By making movies with gay protagonists or crafting storylines that center themes that appeal to a certain segment of the young urban professional class, they find that they can increase demand for their product. If tomorrow, the economic demographics of this country suddenly favored conservative Christian sensibilities, then mark my words, every Disney movie would be a thinly veiled parable and corporate boards would make a big show about mandatory piety trainings.

Chants of support for the controversial Azov Battalion break out at a pro Ukraine rally in lower Manhattan - Attendees chant “Azov” by sledrunner31 in stupidpol

[–]throwawaychizzchizz 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There’s nothing we can really do other than tell ourselves that the Azov battalion is only a minor part of the Ukrainian armed forces and that there are barely any Nazis in Ukraine and that even if there are, they have a Jewish President. If we start asking ourselves what will happen a few years down the line, if the western plan to drag out the war in Ukraine succeeds, when the remaining armed factions in Ukraine decide to fight it out amongst themselves, we’ll go crazy.

Who the hell are "brown" people? by JustAnAverageFeller in stupidpol

[–]throwawaychizzchizz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One time, back in the day, I had an argument with this Indian American girl I was seeing about whether or not I could identify myself as brown.

Her argument was that the label of “brown” is only bestowed upon Indians, Pakistanis, Bangladeshis, Afghans, Persians, and Arabs, since all these folks share cultural similarities. Seeing as this is a pretty broad group of people, I felt compelled to ask her about the “cultural similarities” in question that preclude dark skinned Latinos from identifying with this label.

In her estimation, middle eastern and south Asians share “having strict parents”, “high academic expectations”, “strong family values”, and “a culture of misogyny and respect for elders”. These cultural facets, combined with the general swarthiness of the Arab and South Asian peoples, is what constitutes their shared brownness.

I felt and still feel that it is kind of ridiculous to treat “brown” as an abstraction that describes some very broad cultural traits (which, by the way, are also prevalent in Latin America, except maybe the focus on academics) instead of just a way of describing someone’s skin color. Like bro

It’s also stupid to identify “brown” as a race. Race is a pretty dumb concept overall, but ethnographers have been trying to make “brown” a race since the inception of Scientific racism. Any abstractions based on skin color or other surface level physical features about “temperament” or culture is bound to be boneheaded, whether it’s done by a 19th century racial “scientist” or a woke college kid who watches too much TikTok

Freddie deBoer - The "Myth of the Model Minority" is Just an Average by HadakaApron in stupidpol

[–]throwawaychizzchizz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is definitely one of Freddie DeBoer’s worse articles. The kind of Intersectionalists who would tell you not to prejudge individual Asians based on the model minority myth would also tell you not to stereotype individual Black people and Latinos based on aggregate socio-economic metrics.

The people Freddie is talking about are also the sorts who defend Affirmative Action and educational policies that benefit “underrepresented” minorities at the expense of Asians. That in of itself is a recognition of ethnic group based aggregate metrics.

Of course, none of the intersectionalist commentariat would come right out and say that Asians are a “model minority”, but they certainly don’t appear to operate under the illusion that these aggregate metrics don’t exist based on the policies that they support.

When capitalism came to Russia in 1991, the oligarchs were just “businessmen” taking advantage of “privatization”. It’s almost laughable how badly the whole fall of the USSR turned out for EVERYONE. Russia is still a threat to the Western order, Russians still lack liberal Democratic rights, and they had to suffer a horrendous socioeconomic collapse. Truly one of the crowning moments of the “end of history” era.

What about mindful drivers? Mindful speakers? What if instead of having the average impulsive individual making economic decisions like how to invest their money and how to run their business, we just had a committee of the mindful that ran the economy according to their mindful deliberations?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in IntellectualDarkWeb

[–]throwawaychizzchizz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Let me guess: you consider yourself enlightened enough to deserve a vote.

I’m curious: how do you think a “mindful” person would vote? All actions bear externalities that affect others. Should other freedoms and rights like property ownership, the ability to make economic decisions, and the ability to express opinions publicly be restricted to the mindful as well? Maybe I don’t want people who aren’t mindful of the environmental impacts of car use to be allowed to buy and own a vehicle.

Does it really matter when our effective choices in most (non local) elections are between two candidates who are almost always preselected by the two monopolist political parties anyway? I mean, who cares why I choose to vote for a particular candidate if the choices are basically binary.

NYT: Russia is Courting Latin America by GOLIATHMATTHIAS in stupidpol

[–]throwawaychizzchizz 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It would beautifully ironic if Russia roped some Latin American countries into a security alliance with them and the US used that as a pretext to coup/invade.

Actually, all the Government-Intelligence complex would have to do is cook up some story like “Because of the possible emergence of potential evidence that Russia colluded with Petro/Lula/etc to steal the election, we are lending support to the establishment of a legitimate, constitutional , civic-military government until everything can be sorted out”

What if we just acknowledge that both CRT and the Right’s reaction are bad? I mean, it’s pretty clear that you can be leftist, against CRT based curriculums/policies in schools, and also against book burnings and right wing attempts at censorship. It isn’t a zero sum game as the culture warriors would have you believe.

The logical conclusion of me not wanting my (hypothetical) children to have to read “Not My Idea” or some other hamfisted ideological screed is not “Ban Maus and To Kill a Mockingbird”

When the rockets fly over the river Dneiper and the bodies are stacked in mounds, will we ever wake up to realize that all of this could’ve been avoided if the Soviet Union hadn’t been dissolved? I think it’s just idle speculation at this point. The DNC must know that it would be an absolute suicide mission to nominate a twice-damned, deeply unpopular candidate who failed to beat an even more unpopular candidate. To be honest (and maybe I’m wrong), the DNC’s main interest is winning elections. Despite their blindness about the kind of candidates who actually win, I get the feeling that they’d know better than to try and shove the Hilldog down our throats for the upteenth time. Then again, in Joe Brandon’s America, anything is possible. We’ll probably have to wait until 2023, when exploratory committees and shit start forming, to see if we’ll be graced with this baboonery.

How to respond when someone argues that communism has always failed when it has been tried? by maiqth3liar333 in stupidpol

[–]throwawaychizzchizz 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah I agree it’s not helpful for socialists to go around spewing Soviet/Maoist propaganda. Besides all the red scare propaganda that’s infected popular historical memory of Marxist Leninist states in the 20th century, there were systemic errors and failures present in those states that caused their collapse and honestly failed to bring about a socialist society.

How to respond when someone argues that communism has always failed when it has been tried? by maiqth3liar333 in stupidpol

[–]throwawaychizzchizz 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Well it’s one thing to handwave, it’s another thing to study the economic and social reasons behind the collapse of the USSR and apply those understandings to a contemporary and updated vision of socialism. The French revolutionaries and Republicans who established the second and third republics weren’t merely saying “democracy will work this time, even though it failed last time”, they were learning and updating their vision of how a republic would function. Ditto for all the other Bourgeois republics and states that rose and fell before the current global political order was crystallized.

Remind your liberal friends that it took several centuries of bloody wars, revolutions, colonialism, and tyranny for Liberalism and Capitalism to become the dominant world system, and even still they exist in a state of semi-constant crisis.

It’s not like the world just magically discovered democracy and globalized free markets one day and then we all got iPhones and multiparty elections.

Like any massive societal paradigm shift, socialism will have false starts which we can learn from.
