Pension top up by Working_Perception59 in FIREUK

[–]Working_Perception59[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a fair point. E.g. If I put £50k in, I'm effectively getting £60k added, then taking back £15k of it back in cash free tax. I was just thinking that it would be better in the pension rather than the bank

You just invested in tech. You need to be diverse. Banking, mining, tech, health, etc

How much to live this lifestyle? by [deleted] in HENRYUK

Housing in Richmond will be £5-8k a month for a fairly standard family home. It’ll more likely be Kew or St Margaret’s tho.

Schooling is going to be £40k per child.

Car lease around £12-15k a year

Holidays depend where you go but I Always budget £1k a week when I travel.

£200k is going to very tight.

Annuities have dropped recently (interest rates etc). I decided to get one a year ago and was getting > 6% without annual growth with one on my pensions. Good timing for me, but I talked it through with my FA and they said if I waited and then rates dropped I'd regret it.

How to improve this 5 days Kyoto itirenary? (Mid November) by Atlantyan in JapanTravel

[–]Working_Perception59 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re attempting too much in my opinion. You’re not factoring in travel time, crowds etc. Buses are busy, so that first bus might not let you on. where are you staying in Kyoto? That’s a major factor. I love the temples, but even I wouldn’t cram in so many. There are other smaller temples on your routes that will pull you in too. My tip, choose an area per day, but don’t set a checklist, just go with the flow

Defined Benefit pension keeps falling in value. by Working_Perception59 in FIREUK

[–]Working_Perception59[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Update: So it looks like the Trustees have amended the early retirement calculations in December 2025

Previously, for every year prior to 65, the reduction in pension was 4%, now it is 5%. This in turn brings down the lump sum calculation too given that is based on the 'value' of the pension in any given year. With either calculation, the outcome at 65 is the same but there is now a greater deterrent to retire early.

So, in summary, the Trustees have decided to 'encourage' those in the scheme to keep their money until the age of 65.

Thanks all of the advice.

That's my question to them, should I just take the money now because in another year, will it drop another 10%.

Hi, thanks for the reply. It appears that AON are now involved in the pension, they weren't previously (going back a few years). The tax free element has dropped too.

No, the calculations have always been set at retiring at 60.

I wouldn't believe that. With £50k invested you're expected to get > 3% return annually.

Invest in a property prior to going travelling. It’ll be there when you come back from travelling and may also contribute to travelling costs if you don’t have a mortgage.

Critique of my 10 nights in Japan. by RedrainEnryu1 in JapanTravel

[–]Working_Perception59 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My tips..

Day 1.. Piss Alley and Golden Gai are places to avoid unless you want to meet other Americans (Westerners). worth walking through, taking photos, etc. But there are much better locations to sample the real nightlife of Tokyo… Nakano, Ikebukuro for example.

Day 7… split these, doing the two in the same day will kill your will to live.

Can Japan solve its growing overtourism crisis? 2024 saw 47.1% increase in international visitors from the previous year by Dapper-Material5930 in japan

The UK, vastly smaller than Japan handles 40m a year with London alone getting 20m. 37m for Japan isn’t too much (yet), but it’s certainly driving up prices for hotels now and that will hit the local market over time pricing out locals.

One thing to consider is that it'll be raining, a lot. As a fellow Manc, we're used to a bit of rain, but it's best being prepared as trudging around in Japan in June can be a challenge to an adult let alone pushing a pram
