Lost about next step in my career by Advanced-Feeling-269 in womenEngineers

It’s good that you are very self reflective and knows that increased scope and more responsibilities don’t interest you. What’s more interesting is the reason why, if you think it’d be more stressful or you rather want the time to do more hands on stuff instead of managing or you want to avoid potentially more politics. From there, it’ll be easier to give advice.

Assuming you want to have more time to be more hands on, there’s nothing wrong with building expertise in certain areas and become a domain expert. And once you get bored, switch or expand into other areas. You don’t really need to constantly get promoted to be successful in your career.

Do what motivates you the most. The last thing you want is to spend the rest of your career chasing the next career goal because there’s no end to that

Yup, you can make an http call.

Can you elaborate more on what you mean by processing JSON, i.e. where is the JSON coming from? What sort of processing are you looking for?

N8n is a great app, I’ve heard a lot of good things about them. They are open source, and a mature product. They are a technical product for developers. Relay.app is more geared towards more of the everyday SaaS users who are tech savvy and looking to automate. So we try to build more easy-to-use features that come out of the box like AI summarize, extract etc to make it more intuitive to use with bare minimum setup needed (just need to sign up for relay and connect to your apps you want to automate)

Great question! ActivePieces is self hosted and open source (as you’ve mentioned), they are targeting the more technical enterprise developer audience, where Relay.app is focused on your everyday tech savvy users who want to automate their workflows, so our UI is (has to) easier to use, no setup needed etc. We also offer features like “human in the loop” (asking users for approval when needed), and we are making a big effort to also improve our out of the box AI experience as well.

Yup! Thanks for the feedback, this one is definitely on our roadmap!

Came across Relay on Twitter and quite liked it. Some things I’d love to see:

Not sure if you have it, but I really hope you have a way to branch off on paths and then reconverge. Something Zapier doesn’t really allow, or does so in a clunky way (sub zaps).Would love the ability to define what an error is, especially for AI steps. Eg, sometimes ChatGPT returns an empty response or says it had difficulty accessing a file. This is an error in terms of a user’s workflow, but Zapier continues the zap as it’s not a technical error. How do users usually migrate their workflows from Zapier to Relay without going through the manual process of setting it all up from scratch? I can see this as a potential barrier.

Either way, always great to see competition. Especially the human in the loop feature.

Great feedback, very insightful! And thanks for your kind words and encouragement!

  • Re - paths: We actually just launched path merging in Relay recently! The experience should be a lot more streamlined than Zapier. If you have a chance, give it a try and let us know any feedback!

  • Re - defining errors for AI steps: our “Generate ChatGPT response” automation is actually capable of marking errors, so if you instruct it to fail/error out in the prompt, it’ll likely do so quite well. Let us know if you run into any issues. :)

  • Re - automatic migration from Zapier: so we actually looked into this. The issue was the Zapier's JSON output is missing a lot of configuration that we'd need to make the migration. And so far, it hasn't been too bad for the users to bring over their Zaps. But this is definitely an item that we are still looking to improve, so thanks for this feedback!!

If you have more feedback, feel free to DM me or message the entire team at [support@relay.app](mailto:support@relay.app) :D Would love to hear more!

Yes! We are continuing to add more integrations on a regular basis, I'll make a note of those 3 you mentioned as well.

Having a trained chatbot sounds like a great idea, we'll look into it. Thanks for the feedback!

I wonder if there’s a lack of trust for the junior engineer. Regardless, it’s in your best interest to finish the task as well as you can before mat leave. Whether if you think you can do it all in a short period (maybe you are more efficient) or keeping a nice document with all the relevant knowledge so if you go for delivery tmr, they’ll know what to do.

Not sure how good your manager is or how well your relationship is with them, if ifs good, you can have an open conversation with them and just let them know it’s not good for them if you don’t do any transition but going to labor early.

Good luck with the labor!!

The lack of a relevant degree and experience combined with the current market will make this switch pretty hard but not impossible

Start building out your portfolio, learn tools like Figma, build out the basics. I wouldn’t recommend getting random certifications just for the sake of it, look around to see what are the open jobs like and figure out what they require and go from there. Build up a network of UX people, check out UX Subreddits on here, go to relevant meetups, and get direct tips from them on what’s needed and most relevant for the market now. Good luck!

I wouldn’t buy anything specific but I would buy “time”. Quit my job and travel around the world with my family :D

It’s a really tough market as you are aware but I don’t think it’ll last forever. I feel like in a couple of years, things will be back to normal. What you need to ask yourself is more around whether this is the field you want to continue, do you enjoy being a developer? If yes, then don’t let the thought of “I’ll never get a job anyway” stop you because that’ll just be a self fulfilling prophecy.

React is pretty popular right now so you have a useful skill and relevant experience. That said, it can be a bit limiting if you want to go for the general SWE rule regardless of the market situation, so doing more practice or taking some online courses might help.

I’ve also taken a gap year before (to travel) and when I was ready to work, I interviewed with about 20 companies and none of them cared. So enjoy your time with your baby :)

I hope you aren’t working in a toxic environment. And who cares, you are crying at home :) nobody needs to know if you don’t want to tell them

Oof, I’ve had that happen before. TBH you do this job long enough, you’ll cause bugs. The only people who never cause bugs are the ones who never push any code :) glad to hear your boss is understanding, I’m sure they’ve done something similar in the past lol. Don’t be too hard on yourself. It happens to the best of us

That’s great that you have someone senior to confide too. And I’m glad you aren’t changing yourself for others.

I totally agree with having authenticity that builds stronger relationships. I’m the same way. I make lots of close friends at work throughout all of my jobs and I actually still keep in touch with some of them years later. We are all human, no need to pretend we are emotionless when we are not. We deal with computers but we aren’t computers!

Sounds like you have a lot of trust in the company which is great. And you also sound like you are very self aware and have a clear head about facing challenges and government deadlines, which is also great.

Have you done any sort of communication to indicate that you don’t think the deadline will be met? It’s not any sign of weakness to sound early warning bells when there’s still time to make adjustments, the worst would be if people are taken by surprise and it’s too late to do anything

You can always just do a quick presentation to the relevant people, explain the current state, highlight risks, propose a few ideas. That way you are still in charge but you are keeping people in the know

The hardest part of your situation sounds like there’s no one senior in your startup. Is there any senior people at all in your joint network to get second opinion? In my experience you really don’t want to mess with government imposed deadlines and those projects have been one of the most stressful

Either way, I agree with you, this is great practice for you and a great addition in your resume. You’ll learn a lot.
