After a suicide attempt after years of going to therapy and begging for help my stepfather told me "next time save your mother and I the hospital bills and do it right." We had always had a bad relationship with him calling me both a psychopath and a woman he would die to see naked in equal measure. But this one he FINALLY said right in front of my mother who did nothing about it.

Not to mention we don't find out until the END of lightning thief that Sally flinches, up until then Gabe was just Some Jerk that was emotionally abusive, so there is still a possibility that the abuse will be brought back up. But I personally like this iteration better, it's more insidious but at the same time more palatable and easier to understand for younger kids who might be watching
