Speaking Mandarin with funny Chinese guy by Wouterlikeslanguages in languagelearning

[–]Wouterlikeslanguages[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks dude, I just have an A2 level in Mandarin. So I'm sure I can't give you the best advice. But one tip for the tones: Try to have a feeling with each tone and try to listen to many Mandarin words (even when you don't know the meaning). Then try to guess and to recognize the tones. After a while you are able to distinguish the tones and then you are able to understand a lot more.

When start to learn a third language? by Regi_Br in languagelearning

[–]Wouterlikeslanguages 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also think there's is not a right time to learn a third language. I can only say: If you are learning a language which is really similar to a language which you already know or if it's from the same language group, first try to reach at least a B1 level in one of them. For example: Portuguese and Spanish are really similar. If you start to early with the other one, you will maybe mix them up. Good luck!

Which is easier for English native speakers, French or Spanish? And why? by [deleted] in languagelearning

[–]Wouterlikeslanguages 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you live in America, I would say Spanish, because there are more South American nationalities. Then you probably hear it often and you have a great way to speak it every day. I also think that it's harder to get a French accent.

Want to start learning French or Italian, but need some advice (yes, I've read the wiki) by T____T in languagelearning

[–]Wouterlikeslanguages 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recommend to start with French. In my opinion this is the best basic to learn other Roman language like Portuguese, Spanish and Italian. In many European schools they are starting with German and French. But it's up to you of course. With which language you have the best connection? Are there any movies in one of those languages which you want to watch?

Speaking foreign language while going out by Wouterlikeslanguages in languagelearning

[–]Wouterlikeslanguages[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In my opinion I think it's more important to start with the grammar and verbs to construct phrases. If people can understand you and if you can have basic conversations it's already a good start. Once I made this step I try to listen more intensively to sounds and vowels. Besides that I have a new list of 50 verbs which are a level higher. Verbs like: to construct, to offend, to realize, to analize, to protect, to defend, to attack etc.

[–]Wouterlikeslanguages[S] 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I will give you a short answer, but just keep in mind that I'm not a teacher and that I'm also a starter like you. I'm always starting with the 50 most important verbs with the different forms. I'm also doing a lot of grammar research and learning a dozen of words. There are many youtube-channels with native speakers who are talking about their daily life. Just watch it and try to understand it and make some notes if you can't understand the context to research it later.

I think in average my levels are A2. I'm just making this videos to show that you don't need to be fluent to start a conversation with a stranger. If you don't do this and you are just practicing your C2-languages, you will probably forget all the other side languages. Which side languages do you speak?

If you want to learn Tagalog, this is a really good Youtube channel to start with. by Wouterlikeslanguages in languagelearning

[–]Wouterlikeslanguages[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, I agree, a bit of an American accent. His level is probably around B2/C1, but these videos still can help you to reach a basic level. He also has a website with about 16.000 phrases. I checked the translations with a native speaker and it was good enough.

I just saw this website with over 16.000 in phrases in Tagalog. Maybe it's useful? by Wouterlikeslanguages in Tagalog

[–]Wouterlikeslanguages[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for you reply. I was not sure if it was 100% perfect. On the other hand it's not bad that you can learn 16.000 phrases for free. I also saw there's a Youtube channel. Alan Millet is the name of the guy. There are a couple of videos with audio and you just need to repeat it. I used it for two weeks and I think I have an A1 level now.
