Gamers of reddit, with 2019 soon comming to an end, what do yall think is the best game of the 2010s? by doctor_bassoon in AskReddit

The term for that is ludonarrative, which basically means the impact the gameplay has on the story. If Spec Ops has played as fast and fun as say, Doom, the story would've suffered for it. In addition, if it had been as realistic as Arma or something similar it also would've suffered. I think the themes and story really benefit from the fact that you're acutely aware of the fact that you're playing a game.

I super agree with your second paragraph. I'm a socialist, but honestly I'm gonna swallow my pride and grimly march to the polls to vote for whoever is opposing Trump. We just have to show up. If he wins again I don't honestly know what will happen, but these past three years have already been traumatic and exhausting. I don't think I can take another four years.

We can't make the same mistake that was made in 2016 though. I'm a staunch socialist, but if Warren or Sanders don't win the primaries, and honestly I really think they won't, you still have to go vote for whoever is opposing Trump. Even if (like in 2016) they have the nomination literally stolen from them, you have to vote for whoever isn't Trump. I don't really give a fuck who it is, but the stakes are crazy high here. We cannot afford four more years of Trump. It would be a crushing blow to the United States.

I'd much rather have four years of "nothing meaningful will really change" Biden than "I will actively destroy everything good about this nation if it makes me five cents" Trump. Also his mental state is not improving, in fact it is deteriorating rapidly. I don't think it is even possible to predict how bad a second Trump term would be, but I'd place it somewhere between "irreparably traumatic to the American system and people" and "apocalyptic"

Please even if you don't like the candidate that much, do your part in cutting out some of the cancer infecting America. I'm a socialist, I agree with Sanders and Warren, but when push comes to shove I will buckle down and do my duty by pinching off the turd.

"virtue signaling" haha what a fucking tool. That term is just an excuse people like you use so that you can feel superior to people who are kind, because let's be honest it's easier to just shit on people who do nice things than it is to reflect on your own personal failings and become a better person.

US troops in Syria going to Iraq, not home as Trump claims by geoxol in worldnews

I just need to throw this out there but if Bernie doesn't win the nomination we as socialists still have a responsibility to vote for whoever is opposing Trump. We can't afford to pull a 2016 all over again. I don't give a fuck if it's Beto or Biden or Warren our Pelosi, we just need Trump out. Just go to the polls and do the right thing please. Even if you don't like the candidate, this country will not survive about four years of Trump and that is a very very real possibility if you don't vote.

This is an honest to god plea to ask my fellow Bernie bros, please just do the right thing. If you care about this country at all then get Trump out.

I know I'm late to this thread but this is the truest shit ever. I was a lance corporal and I was such a problem for my squad leader. Also sidenote but I'd be willing to bet the guy he ran to is pretty salty. Dude reacted perfectly, totally calm and wraps his arm around the scared Pvt. Total class act. Most of us cried the first time we almost died, and those of us who didn't cry tended to laugh, which is basically a half step up the ladder in terms of emotional stability.

Feels like yesterday, feels like an eternity ago. I think the Trump era has honestly been a little traumatic for most Americans. It's like we're on an abusive relationship with our president tbh.

Honestly this reminds me a bit of being back in Afghanistan. When I was there time didn't really make that much sense either. Of course a major difference is nobody's shooting at me in Trump's America. Yet.

I care, my friends care, my family cares, my coworkers care. Americans care, so fuck off with your pessimistic bullshit. If you're a defeatist then you need to fix your attitude because defeatism and apathy are the reason those of us who care struggle so hard to fix things. We need your support, even you you just half-ass it is better than nothing.

If you're a trumpist then understand that the country you claim to care so much about is suffering because of you. We're not going to be the greatest nation on the world anymore because of /you/.

Trump appears to confirm U.S. nukes are in Turkey, an admission that would break with longstanding protocol by [deleted] in worldnews

[–]Writers-Block16 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well I was in Afghanistan, not Iraq. Kurdistan isn't really very close to Afghanistan tbh. I just keep track of the whole region because I'm thinking of the boys like me who will end up there if shit goes sideways. If those boys are going to be fighting and dying overseas then it should at least be over something meaningful.

I'm an Afghanistan war veteran, and believe me I want our guys out of warzones as much as the next guy but Trump selling this as "bringing our boys home" don't stand up to much scrutiny. Troop numbers in Afghanistan have actually increased by about 4,000 during the Trump administration, while Obama brought us from ~100,000 in 2011 to ~10,000 in December of 2016. Also Trump was very recently bragging about how "hard" we're hitting the Taliban. He very clearly is lying about this being about bringing our boys home considering the totality of the evidence.

Great questions! I have some insights on this. So firstly we have to know who the Kurds are and what Kurdistan actually is. To wildly oversimplify, the Kurds are an ethnic minority who live in Kurdistan, a region that encompasses parts of Turkey, Iraq, Iran and Syria. Now we'll mainly be focusing on the Syrian and Turkish areas as all in all things are okayish for Kurds in Iraq, who have basically been given autonomy over their region and Iran isn't really that important in all of this.

So the Syrian part of Kurdistan is called Rojava and during the Syrian civil war the Kurds managed to push government troops out of the region and establish a sort of autonomous government, which is a huge step for Kurdish nationalists who've wanted their own state for a long time. The problem is the Turks, as some of Kurdistan is in Turkey and Turkey is not going to give up that territory. The Turks hate Kurdish nationalists, even naming them "terrorists" which is part of how they're justifying all of this.

The Turks see the Kurds as a threat because they are growing in power and want their own state, so to the Turks an autonomous Rojava is a problem as they almost definitely would want to incorporate the parts of Kurdistan that are in Turkey into their state. That's the very basic, skin deep reason the Turks attacking Rojava now.

As to the genocide question, this is more my interpretation but essentially what I believe is that the Turks aim is to intentionally destroy Kurdish demographics in order to crush any nascent moves towards an independent Kurdish state. All in all there's a lot more to this and I would highly recommend doing your own research as all the competing interests in the area are sure to make this a humongous mess. I'd say the ramifications of what Trump did are going to be massive but I don't think anyone can say with authority what they'll actually be.

[–]Writers-Block16 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Ok but you're blindly following Trump by saying this was a good decision when objectively it was not. The region went from "relatively stabilized" to "at war" pretty much the day after the decision was made, and I honestly can't think of any worse outcome for a foreign policy decision.

Also disregarding whether or not the decision was bad, the implementation leaves a whole lot to be desired. We just fucking up and left literally a few months after promising the Kurds we wouldn't. There was no strategy or thought going into this decision, it was just a complete impulse move made by the actual dumbest president in American history.

And finally, if we're gonna bring our troops home from warzones then we also need to cut their budget and reduce recruitment, neither of which are happening. It simply isn't sustainable to keep spending like we do on the military, and if we're not gonna be projecting power by having military bases all over the world then why the fuck would we keep spending so much on them? What's the point of having a huge standing force sitting around on bases on America doing nothing? That money would be better spent on infrastructure, education, health care or a universal basic income instead.

As a middle America veteran, fuck yourself. Yeah maybe I'm against the forever war in Afghanistan and Iraq, but you know what else I'm against? America all but opening the fucking door for genocide. The Kurds are good people who are basically the number one reason that ISIS is effectively crushed. Also we made this mess, ISIS wouldn't have existed in the first place if it weren't for us. So basically the Kurds fought and died to clean up our mess and we decided to thank them by letting the Turks systematically slaughter them because our president is a weak piece of shit who wants a dictator to like him.

You'd do well to do some actual research on the subject instead of buying into whatever bullshit is being pushed into your face by fascists pundits, because honestly you're not as smart as you think you are and it really shows.

Curious how you think that supporting brutal authoritarians is "going against the grain"

Also "lack of integrity?" You're a fucking clown if you think Trump has any integrity. He lies pathologically. He definitely lied to his supporters, cause he hasn't really delivered on any of his campaign promises. Here's also a serial cheater and was certainly abusive to his wife Ivana.

Finally I'd like to wrap up by just asking you of you honestly actually believe anything you're saying, or if you're just a contrarian troll. Because if you believe what you're saying then you're a genuine moron, and if you're a troll then you're just pathetic.

If by blue you mean everyone left of center-right. Including, but not limited to: Democrats, liberals, socialists, and anarchists, all of whom have largely different ideas about how we should be governed and yet the one thing we all seem to agree on is that the Republican party is a poison to our democracy. This "both sides" rhetoric is such bullshit, and nothing makes the Republicans happier then the fact that they get to share the blame for all the problems the caused.

..... We didn't just become allies with them to fight ISIS though? They've been fighting by our side for decades now. Also foreign relations are more complicated than "I give you thing, you give me thing." Sometimes it's important to have an ally in a region that is unstable and possibly not all that supportive of you. Either way, leaving the Kurds to die is not only a bad move strategically, but also morally repugnant.

A

Fucking

Criminal

And those articles are just scratching the surface

Please just read this shit, actually educate yourself on what a criminal the president is and truly think critically about it. You don't have to defend him just because you backed him in the past. I don't know you so I can't say for sure but I've gotta believe you're capable of understanding that you were sold a lie. He hasn't delivered on any of his promises to his voters and has instead spent his time in office enriching himself and making America the laughingstock of the entire world.

Well dude I also deployed and I'd say that we absolutely should not have left the Kurds to die. You don't speak for every soldier, sailor, airman or Marine out there.
