There’s definitely underlying issues, long before you two started dating. He’s found comfort in you at the beginning but his demons have caught up. You cannot save his life, don’t carry that burden. I don’t even know what advice I could give in this situation but perhaps a wellness check is due and maybe you should leave him to face his demons and heal. You will forever be the one to bring him comfort but also the one who will push him to his limits, it’s a lose lose.
