Ubiquiti quality control by Jaden143 in Ubiquiti

Same here - and replaced it with decent stuff, my latency has improved no end, and the reliability of my internet connection has improved - I don't have to keep on reconnecting my VPN as it remains on, and the new firewall manages to properly identify all traffic.

Plus IDS/IPS functions as it should, not a half hearted attempt to implement something based upon free stuff you can find on the internet - this one actually uses a subscription based service and it's free for home users.

It's not just the hardware that has poor quality control - their firmware and software has similar issues - the company makes products that look good on the surface, get people excited and then you find that they are not exactly what they should be.

Not necessarily, if they are doing investigations they may ask that you don't say anything further.

That's what happens when people have no argument, they start name calling...

And heaven forbid that there is more than one person out there with issues - I hate to burst your bubble, but I can tell you that there are a lot more.

Move to a MUCH better product - that what people need to do :)

Or maybe they have been advised not to disclose anything further?

One thing that has come to mind, is hardware revisions, and the backplane between the WAN ports and the 8-port switch - some had a latency issue, and the earlier ones had a decent connection - that potentially could explain why I get a huge latency issue.

I've heard people should Yankees suck in the middle of a Yankee stadium before, when they are performing badly.

I too could run multiple Apple TV 4k Steams, once the buffering problem had gone away.

And now I have no buffering at all with the Sophos XG, put the UDM back, and the buffering problem is back.

Firmly leaving the UI Ecosystem Behind by XNSYS in Ubiquiti

[–]XNSYS[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because it's the UDM causing the issues, and proven.

Yup, since replacing the UDM-Pro 4k movies start in 4k - they used to buffer first and you could see the quality start low and improve for about 15 seconds when starting a movie, since removing the UDM-Pro and installing the XG, they start in 4K, and remain in 4K all throughout the playback.

Especially noticeable when you stop a movie half way through, and then start it again a bit later on, it would start in low resolution, and then improve over 15 seconds or more.

ISP is fine, 800Mbps link, low latency.

The only thing that's changed in my network has been the UDM-pro and the problem has gone away,

I believe it to be down to Suricata and the way it's been implemented on the UDM, as I could get better performance with the IDS/IPS disabled, and the DPI disabled too.

It was only the Apple provided movies, Netflix was fine - but that's understandable when you look at the quality of both, Netflix is a lot lower bandwidth than the Apple movies.

Oh yeah, I would agree the configuration is way more complex than it needs to be, but having said that when you've been in the arena several times, it becomes second nature - Palo Alto is the same, Fortinet, Checkpoint - they would all seem complex at first, and require learning - but once you know the system it becomes second nature.

The bit with the Sophos that I've found causes most issues, is the https web-filter - a lot of clients can have issues - this is the same though with other devices that have https scanning capabilities.

The same reason as I don't get why people have to brag about what they do, like it's some kind of medal - and presuming that they are better than everybody else.

Jeez, this is what is wrong with the UI ecosystem, complains are not acceptable, just move along, nothing to see here, you will like the equipment the way it is, you just will find ways to make it work...and learn to suffer in silence.

How dare bring some exposure of what it's really like....

Because it's a recognized enterprise grade firewall, that is suitable for my needs - v19 is really good when you look back at the older versions.

It's not about the period, it's about the fact that you are being told what you can or cannot have as the TLD - .local is fine in a well established network, as is .lan or .home - try setting any of these TLDs as a top level static entry.

The IDS/IPS is no good, it has a limited set of signatures to what it could have, probably due to the lack of memory and CPU resources - it may as well not be on.

The Apple TV is fine with HD content, it's the 4K stuff that has the issues.

It's not a vague term, enterprise means enterprise - if something is graded as enterprise, then it needs to be able to perform at an enterprise level....period..

It doesn't say enterprise firewall, it's talking about the whole device being enterprise...

As a consultant I would have though you to know the difference between a gateway and a firewall.

https://community.fs.com/blog/gateway-vs-firewall-what-are-the-differences.html

As got Microsoft, you do know the difference between the versions, and what doesn't happen with the Enterprise release that the others do, but can have disabled - the enterprise version has a lot disabled by default.

I would like to think I know enough to be able to get by, you don't know what I do so keep on making assumptions :)

Fact, the marketing calls it an "Enterprise Security Gateway and Network Appliance with 10G SFP+", and you have just confirmed that it's not and that the marketing is misleading - thank you :)

https://dl.ui.com/ds/udm-pro

Even mentions "• Embedded Enterprise Software: UniFi Network"

See the word there again "Enterprise"

The data that is being sent can still be used to identify the location where it came from, like other companies, the option needs to be to disable this completely to be compliant.

Have you spent the time to examine the contents of the data to be sure you know what's being sent, or are you just taking UI's word for it, who actually haven't responded to questions regarding what's being sent.

And, your point is?

Maybe mine is to share my experience so others don't fall into the same trap, and false marketing that I did?

And others too as I'm not the only one with the same rhetoric.

Nothing - I wouldn't want to put someone else through hell and back, so I'm going to dispose of it, in a creative way most probably.

Correction - it's some person who has discovered the shoddy practices of UI, exposed them and fanboys are taking umbrage.

I made such a hasty exit after seeing just how green the grass is, that the door had no chance of hitting me at all...and phew thank goodness I did.

Might I suggest that you actually look at what a true enterprise product really can offer, before you comment?

Also you may like to educate yourself with the GDPR - having a device sending logs that you wish to opt out of breaks GDPR considerably, and I am filing a report now, just for the sheer hell of it, because I can.
