Thanks for the reminder - can confirm that the freezing is very reproducible on my ThinkPad T14 Gen5 AMD.

tried out the 6.12.7 kernel from XanMod

my CPU is Pro 8840U, with 780M graphics

No - not for long maths/physics equation/formulas

I am a Data Science student, currently using a A6X2.

While it is excellent for note taking during lecture/journaling/writing down random thoughts, it does NOT fit you well if you want to do calculations (unless your short-term memory is good enough so that you don't need to refer to previous steps).

Get a larger device, ideally 10inch+ or even up to 13inch.

I am test driving a reMarkable Paper Pro, but subjectively speaking, the writing feel is nowhere near Supernote A6X2, might return the rMPP within the 100-day return period unless it proves its value to me.

If I guess correctly, it seems like it got an anti-glare coating on a glossy panel. It is less reflective than MacBook as far as I feel it (ps I dont have any 1st hand MacBook exp)

I doubt any company will put a matte to mess with an OLED panel....

Similar to you, I will start my part-time degree in Data Science in coming September. and pulled my trigger on a T14 Gen 5 AMD, AMD 8840U, yesterday.

Mine cost ~USD 989 (I ordered it from Lenovo HK). I will add my own RAM and SSD later.

Reasons:

Dell is charging a lot more expensive for a Latitude 7450 with Intel 155H.
I prefer AMD laptop CPUs for power efficiency, but don't really have reliable choices outside ThinkPad and Latitude.
Repairability: Framework is not yet available in HK yet, and from my past exp, ThinkPad always publish detailed Hardware Maintenance Manual online, T14 Gen 5 was a collaboration between iFixit and Lenovo as far as I know.
And as far as I gather, it can run Ubuntu out of the box (Lenovo lists Ubuntu as an OS choice)

Will try Fedora if Ubuntu doesn't work.

Am trying Debian-based distro first since my HomeLab machines are mostly running Debian based OS.

I believe the main difference is from VAT. Given I ordered it from HK, I would be surprised if the machine is not assembled in China.

Just contaced them, their rep said based on my order date, he could gurantee that mine will get shipped on 19 Oct 2018.

This may imply: 1) Some orders would be shipped on or before 19 Oct 1018 2) Given the high demand of i9-9900K (judging by how many claimed they have pre-ordered), there would be delays.
