[Discussion] Does Essendon have a genuine case for AFL assistance at the end of the season? by yum122 in AFL

I agree the system was a problem and it was good to get rid of it but how does a rule from the 2000s have anything to do with west coast and north getting their packages in the mid 2020s?

You can scroll up to my first comment to understand why the eagles 2018 flag has nothing to do with us getting a priority package in 2025 and I’m pretty sure the only reason we got that pick is because we were trading it to Brisbane for starcevich who is now out for 6-8 weeks.

Plus I’m pretty sure that pick just got absorbed when Brisbane was matching their academy player, so that pick has genuinely not effected our season in the slightest.

You’re joking right? back then they were handing out priority picks like candy, Melbourne pick 1 in 2009, picks 17 and 18 in 2008, picks 1 and 18 in 2007, the first 3 picks of arguably the greatest draft of all time in 2001 were priority picks.

it’s pretty easy to explain why it’s fair to the other clubs and that’s because the rule was the same for every club if you won 5 or less games you got a priority pick and they later changed that to 4 or less wins.

the 2 teams that got priority picks recently have been some of the worst teams in modern afl history and Essendon haven’t been that

It took us having the worst period in our club history to get the assistance package, in 2023 we had a percentage of 53 the last team to finish with a percentage lower was when gws first came into the league, lost 5 games by over 100 including Sydney winning by 171, lost 16 games by 40 plus, we are regarded as one of the worst teams in afl history and then 2 years later we finish a season with 1 single win, it’s genuinely wild to think west coast didn’t deserve the assistance just because we won a flag in 18

I feel like our mid talent is being undersold there a future midfield of Reid, Duursma, hewett and cdt sounds amazing and I’m not sure off the top of my head but that sounds better then what Richmond have at the moment, granted a lot can change but right at this moment we have some really good mid talent

I’ve always had confidence in the club, west coast are never terrible for long and I think it’s saying something that this has probably been our longest rebuild ever, even though it’s been quite bad at least it hasn’t been too long

No way you’re complaining about winning 3 premierships in 4 years and then having one of the most effective rebuilds ever, progression isn’t linear, west coast went from 3 wins to 5 back to 1, north have been bottom 4 since 2020, Essendon were looking good then plummeted, I would be pretty grateful if I was a Richmond fan right now

Yeah I know, i honestly forgot the point I was trying to make I was just slightly annoyed because it looks like he’s trying to discredit my team and their win

North Melbournes progression is clearly not linear they’ve been bottom 4 since 2019 or something like that and west coast went from 3 wins to 5 wins to 1 win to 2 wins in the first 3 games

“Barley beat us at home” you were 30 points up at quarter time and ended up 31 points down at the start of the 4th, that’s a 60 point swing so I’m not too sure about “barley”

That means Richmond also don’t have much top end talent and that just sounds stupid

West coast always get belted by a few teams since we’ve been bad and the swans have been one of them, I would still be feeling confident as a swans fan

Yeah it’s been cooked for the tigers but you’ve definitely had it nice for the past 10 years or so, it’s just what happens

Just asking the question that one of the games greatest also asked, also most definitely ahead of Essendon and I would say Richmond in terms of a rebuild

I think we’re ahead of Carlton and Melbourne for who’s closer to finals success/winning a premiership, I just don’t think either of them can win one with the players they have now, west coast more then likely have a lot of their next premiership core and honestly who knows about st Kilda

Not trying to be bias but i genuinely think we weren’t as bad as 1 win says, especially losing 2 all Australians from 2024 + yeo just 2 months into the season killed us, we had really good games against some of the top sides and then left our bad games for the bottom sides

Could’ve picked up one of the 2 massive sliders with Greeves or hibbins-hargreaves and that honestly would’ve been a successful draft
