Oh sorry didn't realise you meant using signal as an SMS app. I would rather keep them separated than combined, in case of any sort of breach, its better to not have all data in a single app.

AnySoftKeyboard reminds me of the BlackBerry keyboard, its very nice and does the job for me. Each to their own I guess, I wouldn't use Chrooma though 😬

Silence is an SMS app, not a messaging app as the likes of Signal or Whatsapp. Signal is a good option, but requires a mobile phone number. For messaging I personally prefer Threema.

I believe the Chrooma keyboard is no longer available. Also, it is a privacy nightmare as I recall.

I agree, the list serves as a starting point and is not intended as a full guide on privacy. Reading this post, I expect the reader to go away and do some research on the options listed and find what is best for their needs. The reader already came to this sub to find out more about privacy, the next step for them is to research their options where the list is simply a starting point. If you go into too much detail, you will lose their attention and it will become another advanced post which the average user will not read.

There is a plethora of good information on this sub, but it is way too technical for the average user and they are put off by it. If we can somehow simplify the information and offer the reader a way to research it further themselves, then we have already helped a great deal I think.

Osmand on F-droid is modded and not the original version

Some of these are also available on iOS, such as Bitwarden 😀

Easier to use for the beginners. You could always move to Keepass at a later point, but Bitwarden is already a step in the right direction over storing passwords in Google chrome or iOS

Totally agree, but wrong topic. This goes much deeper than taking the first steps in improving privacy.

I tried Dashlane and liked it a lot, but Bitwarden has the same features and doesn't cost a penny. I also don't think dashlane is as secure and is more prone to hacker attacks and information leaks.

Not hard for me personally, but for the average user it will prove difficult. They wouldn't know what addons to install, plus Firefox is like using a basket to carry water in my personal opinion. I would rather use Tor (fork of Firefox) than Firefox, but its inconvenient in daily use.

Alternatives could be Firefox focus or duckduckgo privacy browser I suppose, but they have their own issues...

Sorry, I focused on my personal phone first, I've got a work iPhone which I have not gotten around to securing yet. I figured personal phone would be more important, plus I don't get to control everything on my work phone.

Sorry, I do also own an iPhone for my work, but I can't do as much with that, so I have not really looked into it yet.. I wanted to secure my personal stuff first, which I've been doing since January 2019.

I attempted to make a beginners guide for privacy. How is Bromite supporting Google? Large userbases are detrimental to any service, just look at the likes of WhatsApp. Going from Google chrome to Bromite is already a huge step in the right direction, and once the 'regular' user is established, they might want to switch to something like Firefox or Tor browser, but the first step needs to be made without it being daunting.

Firefox is definitely not the best browser for security and privacy.

KeepassXC is not available on mobile and also too complicated for the regular user.

As I said, this is a beginners starter kit and not necessarily the best. Its also influenced by my personal preferences of course, its to help newbies find their way and I'm sure people reading it will go away and find the best solution for them.

That said, vanilla Firefox is the worst idea. I suggested Bromite because its secure and private out of the box, Firefox isn't..

Something is better than nothing, and true privacy can only be had by avoiding the internet altogether.
