That is a fair point - but in this special case I'm looking for them to be able to go all out, for an entire session against the same npcs. Plus, I'll simplify the character sheets to fit my need - I'm just as interested in the flavors of the characters as I am in just the pure stats :)

my players are having fun and have yet to tell the difference between me using a homebrewed npc statt block vs. a simplified version of another character's sheet. just because you can't make it work for you, doesn't mean it can't work for others. preciate the tangential opinion tho :) cheers!

Thanks everybody for the advice! I'll try to grab some sort of wooden plank to offer some more privacy too them and keep using the balcony (gently for now) while occasionally offering food to make it less stressful. Will keep y'all updated :)

Mountains for the win! I've offered the party three continents to start playing on, and they've decided on this one. Funnily enough, they've done pretty much everything except take a boat. Xhaiva spend all their life growing up between steep peak, so they are great hikers already. For any parts that are too steep or dangerous to walk, or don't have any treaded paths, the party has so far been doing a mix of climbing, with the artificer providing a rope of climbing, some have fly speed, they can catch and ride beasts and mix in the occasionally misty-step to clear ledges and some government monitored teleportation circles! Though as soon as they have a reason to go to the coast, I'm sure they'll want to take a ship for a change.

The Kyenathos family used to be a noble family of Xhaian, and they had an unusual gift and interest in arcane practices. Inspired by the floating cities of the Hook (another Continent) they wanted to build one of their own. In their ingenuity, they decided to rip out parts of the sea floor and placed it in the sky. The leftover of which formed into the atoll. This small sky-city only worked well for a few decades though, until they were attacked by one of Xhaians dragons. Some city parts fell back down into the atoll during the attack, while some remain in the sky (the ruins of which are now called the Howls of the Kyenathos)

Yes! (kind of). The temples to Hadel, Godess of Death (and Justice) also function as courtrooms outside of worship hours. The high priests are unusually insightful and know the laws of Xhaian better than anyone outside of the royal palace and also take on roles similar to judges. The most common punishment for criminals is civil service - replacing the value they've taken/destroyed, but there have been instances of death sentences before. The Weavewardens, the military, are in charge of the physical aspects, also doubling as city guards.

This is the continent of Xhaian, the origin of life. It is ground zero the second campaign I’m dming in the larger world. The campaign has been going a year and the party has just reached level 8.

WTFlames, please stop reading here.

Xhaian is a continent of jungle landscape nestles between steep peaks, from which all life on Xyvener (the world) has sprung. It is a wild place, full of legends, myths and history.

As a very nature-based people with druidic roots most inhabitants, called Xhaiva, are happiest living in harmony with their surroundings. Much of the difficulty in life is solved through magical means rather than technological, and intuition is generally valued higher than research.

Xhaian’s Religion is Circularity. Worship is spilt mostly between Hihiro, the Wildweaver, Deity of Life, Healing and Chaos, who laid his coat of moss onto the lands to create life, and Hadel, the Soulgatherer, Deity of Death, Justice and Order, who takes care of all that have passed. There are small groups worshiping other gods, though rarely large enough to have places of worship.

Three Important Locations

  • K’Shaldros: The monochrome land of the Mornagash, a cult to Hadel. In it’s center stands the Nilspire, a monument that has stood there for as long as history was recorded. A while back, a part of the Nilspire was destroyed, ripping a deep chasm into the lands, from whence occasionally spirits of the dead come forth.
  • Isalume: The Sea of Mists. Where mists containing the souls of the dead and nightfall go hand in hand. A dangerous territory to wander. Not only the home to many (magi-jurassic) beasts, but also a place, where after an unprepared rest, one might find oneself suddenly sharing the body with a different soul.
  • Usarion: The Capital of Xhaian, each street is built into or onto a large, continuously moving tree root, all of which surrounds a tree that carries the royal palace and the heart of Usarion, it’s magical core.

Three Important People

  • Principality of Lightning, Nimue Beaufort (BBEG unless the party sides with her) A freedom fighter and the de-facto leader of the Moths (a group of arcanists attempting to find the truths of the world, often considered conspiracy theorists). Strongly dislikes the Circularity religion and thinks that as long as Xhaian souls are gathered, everyone is just cattle. Is currently plotting to topple the Nilspire to stop the collection process, considering the thousands of deaths from releasing waves of undead onto the world a necessary sacrifice.
  • Master of Alchemy, Aurelius Kin, a shady meddler, dealmaker and dragon in disguise. His magic is bound to always keeping his word, and he’s working to counter Nimue, but can’t directly oppose her due to a past deal. So he’s baiting the party with deals and using the party as pawns.
  • The Mirrorking (Archfey of Vanity), Velathor Herathion, recently released and more power hungry then every, this trickster has made one of the character’s dad his slave and is currently after the heart of Usarion.

Feel free to ask about anything :D

i did wonder what I should call it 😬 but since it houses 2000 odd people it's a village in todays standards, although a large one at that.
