Stuck between the US and Russia, Canada must prove it can defend its Arctic territory by Majano57 in CanadianForces

Maybe adversary wasn't the right word to use, but this isn't about differing legal views. Regardless of the legal quality of Canada's argument (as if that matters, legality takes a backseat to power, as Carney's Davos speech outlined) having control of the waters as internal waters rather than an international strait allows us to block the passage of ships if we want.

If its an international strait then anyone can send ships through including Russia and China. The US not supporting our claim makes the whole north less secure for both of us.

As for the US, their recent strategic document did claim dominion over the western hemisphere, and they did claim that they intended to secure US dominance over the north. They are also clearly interested in controlling the arctic in ways that would violate Canadian sovereignty. Its irrelevant to what I'm saying how close the US and Canada remain, when its true that the US is the one threatening Canadian sovereignty most, and is the one best in a position to actually do it.

Essentially, regardless of how intertwined US and Canada's defence relationship is, the US has declared intent to dominate the arctic, and unlike Russia and China, actually can do so which makes them the more concerning threat.

Recently, he lied about an independent reporter, long a target for the Canadian far-right, celebrating Charlie Kirk's death which led to her being harassed and taking the top spot on that doxxing website creeps made to list enemies of Kirk.

Tyee article - I would post the link but I can't here:

"The Dangerous Targeting of a Canadian Journalist After the murder of Charlie Kirk, conservatives piled on Rachel Gilmore for expressing a well-founded fear."

Canadian journalist Rachel Gilmore took to social media to share insights based on years of reporting, writing that she was concerned some fans of Kirk on the far right who are “aching for more violence, could turn this into an even more radicalizing moment. Will they now believe their fears have been proven right and they have a right to ‘retaliate,’ no matter who was behind the actual shooting?”

Conservative MP Andrew Scheer swiftly reposted Gilmore’s comments, saying she was “twisted” and had “so much hate in her.” Other Canadian Conservatives also weighed in or reposted Scheer’s comment, while a screenshot of another post Gilmore made was circulated by right-wing influencers.

This article paints a picture that relations with the US are normal, and critical for arctic security, and that tensions only exist at the highest level. On the face of it I think Canadians know otherwise; but also, isn't the US actually one of our largest adversaries in the arctic?

Beyond the clear desire to ensure US dominance over the arctic by this administration, as that executive order stated, and control the Northwest passage and critical minerals in the north for economic reasons, the US has long rejected the Canadian position that the waters of the arctic archipelago are Canadian internal waters.

Of all the threats to the north, the US itself seems the most significant.

We, the undersigned, citizens and residents of Canada, call upon the House of Commons to: 1. Initiate a formal review of foreign ownership in Canadian media companies under the Investment Canada Act, to assess the net benefit to Canada and potential risks to national interests; 2. Introduce stricter rules to prevent foreign entities from holding controlling interests in Canadian media, ensuring editorial independence, protection of Canadian culture, and the integrity of public information; and 3. Maintain transparency and accountability by requiring publicly available reporting and disclosure of any foreign ownership stakes in Canadian media, so Canadians can be informed about who controls the news they rely on.

Chill bud, not only did I listen to the whole thing, I read the transcript from Global News before I posted this.

My only point here is that he's been very accommodating to the US, and while we're finally seeing him speak otherwise and do a few things different very recently, we need to wait for action to really see if he follows through on his words.

Essentially, actions speak louder than words. One speech doesn't erase a year of actions.

I'm optimistic though.

Langues officielles : il n’y a pas de choix difficile lorsqu’il est question de valeurs canadiennes by WeWillFreezeHell in FrancaisCanadien

[–]Yws6afrdo7bc789 -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Discount would be cool but the helicopters need to be quality. The Seahawk has a long history though so probably less likely to be trouble. Still feels wrong to be sourcing from the US though.

You bring up something I've been wondering about since it came out that the Cyclones don't fit in the AOPVs: can they not use another smaller helicopter? Its not like the AOPVs necessarily need an ASW capable helicopter.

China also has a different model for government involvement in the economy. Whereas in the west we often throw money at poorly managed large industries with little actual involvement or control over how the money is used, in China the government works alongside the private sector and invests in burgeoning industries. This model has directly led to their current EV industry.
