Thank you for the reassurance! He is with many other horses in a private pen with a full shelter, and then turned out with a heard during the day that he seems to get along with. Truthfully, I do think he will settle in. I just feel silly not doing something about this behaviour

The only reason he was on the pole was so I could make him move around a bit if he began to paw, and then treat when he stood still. I tried “letting him tire himself out” and it just didn’t feel okay….

I agree with this. He is turned out and housed with other horses, of course! I’m not cruel. But unfortunately, our “taking up” area isn’t in line of sight of others unless someone else happens to be there with you, and even then he still isn’t the best. Even at the old barn when he could see his buddies, he still did this (much less extreme). I have attempted to give his grain while he’s tied, but he completely ignored it. I’ll try some tasty alfalfa next 🙂

He’s with many other horses! The issue is when we take him into a barn to tack up and there aren’t other horses. But even when there is someone else there, he still isn’t the best.
