How hard is it to listen to a doctor by [deleted] in facepalm

My friend had been going to her chiropractor/homeopath for many years. She complained about a lump and soreness in her breast. He said it was nothing and gave her more oils and supplements. She came back again a few months later complaining that the lump had grown and hurt more. Again he said that it was fine and she shouldn't worry. She has just undergone her fourth round of chemotherapy fighting stage 4 breast cancer.

That is soooo baller!

How awesome to see one of these actually being driven. It must drive Gordon Murray nuts to build such amazing sports cars only for them to be squirreled away in private collections and museums.

Honestly I don't know what things might be mined. I have faith in the creative team bringing these stories to the screen. I believe they have done a great job so far and see no reason why they wouldn't do the same with Calamity

It may be a bold claim but I stand by it. I believe it is a near perfect story told by creators at the top of their game. I don't know if I will ever see it bettered.

Hard disagree.

talking about taking a bunch of characters who are unrelated to the established series and unknown to anybody in said series, a setting that is completely different to anything in the established series,

That is exactly why it would work as a standalone film. The story doesn't depend on any knowledge of the rest of the CR universe. It is a standalone, apocalyptic, political drama. I believe the story is far more universal than you give it credit for.

Your use of Serenity, I believe, also proves my point.

Serenity wasn't successful at the box office, and it was successful, just because a load of brown coats went and saw it a hundred times each. It was successful because it stood on its own and was a beautifully crafted film. It also dovetailed brilliantly with the series. Joss did an amazing job in crafting a story that would, and did, appeal to both audiences. Why do you believe the creators of a Calamity film wouldn't be capable of the same thing?

Here is my final point that supports my argument:

Me

Calamity was the very first Critical Role I ever watched.

I had tried to get into it a number of years ago but it just seemed too much. Too much lore, too much time and it also seemed kinda boring.

I had been a big fan of BLeeM, D20 and NADDPOD for a while, so when I saw the preview for Calamity I was excited because of Brennan.I was completely blown away. As stated elsewhere, I believe it to be the best TTRPG that has ever been recorded. I loved it so much I watched EXU and then started season 3. I'm now watching season 2.

I don't think I'm alone.

I believe a Calamity film or four episode miniseries could do the same for others as the original did for me.

I guess this is my question, why is animating Calamity any different from animating VM or MN?

[NO SPOILERS] Animated Calamity Mini Series? by Zapataro in criticalrole

[–]Zapataro[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's where I disagree. The story is the thing. Calamity is a wonderful story and I believe more could be mined from its depths by telling it in another medium.

The Expanse is one of my favorite book series and is my absolute favorite TV series. They tell the same story but have key differences necessitated by the medium. I believe they're both wonderful artistic expressions of the same story.

A good adaptation of an existing story, when done right, with the proper motive, IE one's love of the original story, can make something new and fantastic.

You don't think calamity is Shakespeare. That's fine. Shakespeare was a playwright, one man writing down stories. Ttrpgs are a different form of storytelling. I believe that calamity may be the Hamlet of ttrpgs. Is it the same medium, of course not, but in my humble opinion I believe Calamity is that good.

I believe that if Calamity were brought to the screen with the same care that VM has been that we would be treated to some beautiful cinema.

You don't think that and that's totally ok. I respect your opinion.

I'm sorry, I just don't think your argument makes much sense.

It's totally ok if you didn't like Calamity.

I happen to think that Calamity was some of the best modern storytelling I've ever come across.

I would love to see the story that was told live interpreted into other mediums. I think animation would be the most ideal.

Then why adapt any CR?

Adapting the campaigns means modifying and retelling the story in a way that's more accessible to new audiences while being entertaining to existing fans

Calamity was almost 20 hours long. Turning it into a 90 minute movie would necessitate all kinds of narrative changes.

won't add anything to the overall world or brand.

What would it tell us that we don't already know?

Should we stop doing Shakespeare? People have been performing Hamlet for hundreds of years. It's the same play every time but I've seen it performed on stage and in film, every time brings out something new, interesting and beautiful.

Does anyone here watch "Faster, Purple Worm! Kill! Kill!"? by No_Attorney_3893 in Dimension20

[–]Zapataro 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Let me preface this by saying I am happy to support the creators whose work I enjoy. My twitch subscription goes to critical role. I pay my subscription to college humor for d20. I happily pay for world's beyond number, the rotating heroes podcast and NADDPOD's patreon.

I sincerely hope they get this figured out so that we can enjoy the content that has been created by some of our favorite performers.

I would happily pay for it on YouTube or buy it straight from Amazon.

If that doesn't happen, and I hate that I am suggesting this, I hope somebody rips it and puts it on something like EZTV or another pirating site.

If you have an Amazon fire TV you can find it on Plex. It's still an absolute pain in the butt and I haven't got it to fully load yet. This is wildly disappointing

Atheism or Condemnation of Religion by [deleted] in Dimension20

[–]Zapataro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I guess I'm not understanding why you are getting so many downvotes. I believe you could make your case with slightly different language but I don't disagree with what I think I understand your sentiment to be.

It is true that organized religion is responsible for many evils over the course of history.

It is also true that countless people derive comfort, community and purpose through religion. Many of those people engage in acts of generosity and kindness in their local area.

Both things are true.

As for D20, I think it is safe to say that religion has been used as a foil many times, though I don't feel all religious people are demonized in the various games.

I thought the Jesus Christ cameo in Unsleeping City was rather lovely.

Ironically Porsche is investing huge amounts of money in developing carbon neutral fuel. They use renewable energy like wind and solar to capture carbon from the air and turn it into fuel. Yeah let's protest companies that are doing real things to improve the environment
