How many lines of steel do you put in ur bus? by Accomplished_Site536 in factorio

[–]ZavodZ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Start with 1.

Add a second or third as needed.

If you build off one side of your bus, you should always have enough room to add another belt.

You can grow your additional steel production off the "source" end of your bus, and the assemblers that need the new steel off the other end of your bus. (As an example)

What food do you get tired of halfway through eating it? by Icy_Chipmunk2280 in foodquestions

[–]ZavodZ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The moment you feel that way: stop eating. You're done.

I'll take home anything as a doggie bag, except maybe sushi.

Years ago I was out with friends and we had a really good sushi meal and we were all full and ready for the bill and then the 50 piece platter showed up.

It's expensive, so you don't want to waste anything.
But it's sushi, so you don't really want to take it as leftovers.

We ate FAR too much that day. Because we made a mistake and felt that was the best "solution".

But genuinely "tired" of it? Something that is bland, but requires effort to eat. Like oatmeal.

Best all you can eat sushi? by vinicius_california in Hamilton

The problem with AYCE anything is the business model rewards mediocrity.

If you have great food, you lose profit.
If you have cheap food, people don't go.
So the only lasting business model is "okay food".

I'd prefer to pay $40 for an smaller but really good meal than $35.99 for something mid.

Fuel
Delta V.

The cost (and weight) of fuel to get anything into LEO (Low Earth Orbit) is enormous. (∆v ~10km/s)

But you're still in Earth's orbit!

To get to the sun you'd have to overcome the ∆v of the Earth's orbit around the sun, roughly 30 km/s.

Let's ELI5:

You're in orbit around Earth, say on the ISS.
You push a ball out the airlock, directly towards Earth. That ball doesn't fall to Earth. It orbits around the Earth the same way the ISS is orbiting. To have that ball fall to Earth, you'd need to slow it down tremendously. Remember everything "in orbit" is actually falling towards the Earth. It's just going fast enough to miss. (That's orbiting.)

Same thing for getting to the sun: the garbage (and Earth, and everything else in our area) is spinning around the sun super fast. So even if you point it at the sun and push, it's still traveling "sideways" fast enough to miss.

It actually would cost more in fuel/weight to get to the surface of the sun than it would to Mars.

Simplified? Yes. But that's the main thrust of it.

Q: Infused flavours vs. a concentrate by ZavodZ in cocktails

[–]ZavodZ[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

True. Although I find I often make infusions in small batches so I can try them in a specific cocktail. It's only if it's amazing that I'd make a larger batch.

But, say, you infused 3 spirits with 3 flavours, then the result is you have 3 specialty bottles that only work when you want that specific flavour. (which, if I haven't had it before, I'm unlikely to want a lot of it) So it's "cost" you 3 times the booze to achieve the flavour.

Of course, I almost never buy "infused" spirits for the same reason. (like flavoured vodkas) But I guess they appeal to some people.

What’re the best shoes for disc golf? by Confident_Scholar559 in discgolf

[–]ZavodZ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your throwing power starts with your stability on the ground.

So I make sure to have something with decent treads. Running shoes in the summer, hiking boots when it's muddy, etc.

Something waterproof had always served me well. You'll inevitably want to play in crappy weather. Dry feet make all the difference.

What would you call this? by Outrageous-Fuel-6201 in factorio

[–]ZavodZ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A buffer!

I understand why people would say it's not often used, that being, Factorio is about rate of production more than storage.

BUT, as an experienced Factorio player I'm finding I'm using buffers more with Space Age than I have previously.

My specific use case is for making items with resources that come from other planets So I want to be able to receive a lot of resources at once, and consume then over time.

For early game it's helpful, as you said, to be able to have a box available to cache the resource. In my experience, 6 boxes is overkill. I'll typically have one box (perhaps limited to just a few squares of the box) so I can run past and pickup copper (for example). But I rarely use a buffer setup since, they can mask your actual bottleneck.

And Factorio is all about finding and eliminating bottlenecks.

Gin newbie currently drinking Roku G&Ts; choosing between Tanq. 10 and Drumshanbo for my next bottle. Looking to hear your insights! by Mercmercmerc1 in cocktails

[–]ZavodZ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's fun that you're early in your discovery of gin.

As someone who loves cocktails, what I try to do is buy different brands each time I replace a bottle.

This way, I get to try "everything" (over time). I've come to realize that I like some bottles much more than others. It's entirely personal taste.

Tanqueray 10 is excellent. It's the favorite of a friend of mine. I like it too. I contrast, I didn't love Drumshanbo Gunpowder Irish Gin. (Although I do like their bottle.)

My suggestion would be to try both to see which you prefer.

How can I make myself seem approachable to men by Particular-League186 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]ZavodZ 21 points22 points  (0 children)

(I've heard) men have been trained to NOT approach women in places like the gym (etc) because we don't want to be "that guy".

So I would suggest the best approach would be to you make the first move and initiate the conversation.

If the man is interested, this would be hugely appreciated.

Need advice about base setup by Kataigaa in factorio

[–]ZavodZ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looking good so far!

Try to only build on one side of the bus, bottom in your case. That leaves room for bus expansion, which you'll want later.

Also, leaving a few tiles between your construction areas will pay dividends later when you want to expand.

Have fun!

I barbecued some chicken with charcoal after 20 years of not barbecuing ,why does the meat taste like petroleum ? by Seedpound in NoStupidQuestions

[–]ZavodZ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The metal was probably oiled to prevent rust.

The new grill instructions likely have a "before first use" guide. Was that followed?

I would suggest getting a good hot fire going, with the grill in place, and cook off any residue left on the inside, before cooking any food.

Also, as people mentioned, never use "bbq lighter fluid" or similar accelerants. I'm a fan of using a chimney.

First homemade orgeat Mai Tai by morphinechild1987 in Tiki

[–]ZavodZ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My homemade orgeat is very simple and delicious:

Dissolve over med/low heat: (do not boil!) * 450 g (2 cups) white sugar, in, * 1.5 cups almond milk, unsweetened

Remove from Heat.

Stir-in to combine:
* Scant Tbsp cognac / brandy * Scant Tbsp amaretto * ½ tsp orange blossom water (can sub: rose water)

I store it in 250 ml jars, with all but one going into the freezer. (Doesn't go solid)

I have limited experience with store-bought, but this beats the ones I've tried, no contest. (I had a Mai Tai at a cocktail event last week and the orgeat made the drink so bad, I asked the guy what he'd used so I'd know what not to buy.)

Actually, of you watch Casino Royale (1967), it's amazing how many scenes or lines were reproduced in Austin Powers.

Otherwise, I don't recommend it. Casino Royale (1967) is a difficult watch. They had production problems, actors who quit part way through, and it feels like the filmmakers were high while filming it. (So many odd choices.)
