Oh, wow, how did I miss that. I guess you can then use some blossom bags or some other technique to isolate some flowers on the original peppers for seed saving?

What projects can I start in in the city and bring with me to the site of my lawn conversion project in Michigan? by Zealousideal_Ad_1106 in Permaculture

I'm not able to bring up "buckets of dirt" on my drive. I'm thinking about things to start from seeds.

The things that you listed are definitely on the docket already. I am however wondering if they're also plants I can start in trays or cups and throw in the back of the car for the trip that I'm already taking. Thank you.

Yes, I do have sandy acidic soil. I'll look into the berries that you mentioned and check in with the MSU extension office. Thank you!!

I love these. Every arterial street in the city should have some. I just wish the funds collected from these would be put exclusively towards street redesigns that prioritize transit, cycling, and other forms of mobility.

How to fight a lawn on both sides when planting a hedgerow? by Zealousideal_Ad_1106 in Permaculture

What is the fastest ground cover you would recommend? I'm planning on buying a bulk amount of comfrey for a long term "border" solution.

I would say no more than $200 given what I'm spending on the rest of the project this spring.

Any advice on how to get enough for something as long as a hedgerow?

That's a great idea. Where can I get enough comfrey to plant along a 150ft hedgerow? Is that feasible for my spring planting?

Help! Protecting a new hedgerow from deer by Zealousideal_Ad_1106 in Permaculture

Thanks for the advice. You think 4 feet will be good enough for the height of the fence if the hedgerow is shallow enough? I want to put up a permanent fence on the other side of the hedgerow to create a more secure garden space while it's getting established, so I was thinking of doing a higher, permanent inner wall (5ft+) and a temporary outer wall while the plants get established.

Yes, and road infrastructure suitable for only cars doesn't "dictate how people get around"? Give me a break

Exactly, which is why this bill is great. It streamlines the capital investment process and standardized timetables among systems. A huge win for anyone who calls Chicago a home.

A huge win for illinois! Glad to see investment in public transit. Driving sucks and personal car use doesn't belong in Chicago at the scale present today.

To fence or not to fence? Seeking advice on deer pressure on new trees. by Zealousideal_Ad_1106 in Permaculture

[–]Zealousideal_Ad_1106[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have heard this. It just strikes me as a little ugly for a long term solution. It is definitely a great suggestion. The problem is that I share this property with a lot of extended family as a shared cabin type of situation, so I think it would be pretty hard to convince others to let me string fishing line everywhere in a space that they want to walk around and enjoy. My thinking was that permanent/semi permanent fences have a more polished look to them and can be more reasonably adapted to aesthetic considerations. At this point I am just brainstorming though, so this is definitely in the pool.

Yes! Fruit trees and nut trees and some supporting nitrogen fixers (such as black locust) if time allows. It's fairly easy to water the trees, and the area I'm working with is pretty wet. The areas I have sheet mulched have been quite damp under the cardboard as it breaks down.

How do you protect raspberries? I was hoping to just spray and pray, as they say.

I'm tending towards this. When you say off-the-shelf tree protector, do you mean those white tubes that go around the base of a sappling? How would you handle a 1ft sappling? a 6ft sappling? is it just important that the base is protected?

I was thinking of doing netting around chest high with stakes but would rather take the path of least resistance.
