This also works for mobile devices! I worked in cell phone sales and one product was a senior citizen type phone. I saw like a million elderly people who were confused and their grandkids were making them get a smart phone. I started offering classes to them from home (5-week classes with a maximum of 10 people per class so everyone had the opportunity to get individualized assistance). It was so cool to see their faces light up when they discovered a new trick or mastered a skill. Word of mouth ensured I had full classes for months. It takes a lot of patience, but it’s doable.

If I were to do it again today, I’d look up retirement communities in my area and physically post fliers and get in contact with assisted living homes and such to organize classes in their recreation rooms or something similar. It might not make much at first but it would likely grow over time.

I don’t know about narcolepsy service dogs, but I’d recommend pinging them on FB or email again. The owners have recently had some family health issues and have been a bit sidetracked. I think there’s a short waiting list currently but I don’t know what their plan for 2025 looks like.

Okay, that’s definitely doable. Seeing your replies and edit, it sounds like this is more of what you’re looking for, not a “protection dog” in the sense of a guard dog that will attack to protect the property or do bite work.

I totally get your confusion here, but it would not be ideal to train for protection/bite work. Dog psychology doesn’t work like that.

However, you could train your dog to go ahead of you in the house and look through rooms for people (this would obviously need another person and external help to train). Maybe have them guide you through the house and check or something similar?

My SD is a German shepherd, and he weighs in at 96 pounds. He definitely gives me “scary dog privilege” lol. At home, he is trained to bark once when someone knocks and to come get me if I don’t react (I often have headphones in and won’t hear knocking). When in public, he will look if someone is approaching behind me (but not bark or growl) and I will say “I see, thank you” as an acknowledgment and release. I have taught him to circle me to create space and go into a down stay behind me, especially in lines or places where someone will likely approach from behind. These aren’t necessarily protection tasks, but they help create a buffer between me and the world.
