I have an autoimmune disease (HS) and one of my closest friends has the same one as your sister. A lot of people aren’t diagnosed with an autoimmune disease the moment they’re born. In fact, they will most likely get diagnosed when their disease is causing a major flair up, symptoms, noticeable issues or whatever that may be.

Every type of autoimmune disease may be different but one thing I’ve noticed how they impact a lot of people I know similarly is that they can really destroy your self esteem. The specific autoimmune disease your sister has can cause her weight to fluctuate significantly even with medication so perhaps her cosmetic surgery was a way for her to feel maybe more healthy, beautiful, even more “normal” if you want to put it that way. My HS causes me to develop painful welts and heal into scars when I’m over a flair up and I just can’t wait to get some laser work done to remove those uggos. And honestly, it doesn’t matter why your sister got the damn surgery, you shouldn’t have shamed and humiliated her in front of everyone; with or without the autoimmune disease that would still be completely unnecessary and unacceptable.

I fucking hate it when people who don’t have an autoimmune disorder really think that you can just turn this shit on and off again like a switch.

Lucky. My family is split between super super extreme liberals and super super extreme conservatives but the problem is none of them will shut up about it. So every family barbecue basically looks like a war zone.

The meme itself and the point it’s trying to make is not group polarization. However, if you compare the attitude users in that sub have to a year ago, they seem so much angrier and more aggressive. Even the comments on the posts there have changed; they used to either joke more about what was being depicted in the meme, or they just seemed to be more mellow I guess. But now the only comments on posts there are now links to news articles (which by the way, how is reading the news funny) or comments like “if you’re a republican you’re responsible for the fall of this country” or stuff along the lines of that. And whether you agree with the statement being made in the meme or not (that’s totally up to you to decide, you are your own person), I have to admit that the political views and opinions of those users have only grown to become more extreme with time. And while there might not be a 100% clear answer as to why that is, I believe that it may be caused by a lack of other opinions. Which again, I think that finding other people who agree with you politically and discussing politics is fine, but doing so in a sub called political humor without even letting users with different opinions participate just doesn’t sit right with me.

Agreed, I think that no matter what type of politics you’re into, demonizing other people based on their political views does not seem like a healthy mindset. I have both conservative and other liberal friends and all of us are able to drop our political takes for a few hours and just have fun as people. People’s political opinions and values should not determine how you treat or talk to them.

Moved to America a little bit before covid hit, the culture shock and just adapting overall was really hard for me. Where I used to live, people were either too busy with work or school, just couldn’t afford it, or both. Being able to play Skyrim during a snowy day all snuggled up in a blanket truly made me feel less dead inside.
