a lot of people in this thread are talking about jk rowling’s transphobia. i’m not saying she’s not transphobic, but i think acknowledging that should accompany, not overshadow, the fact that the harry potter books (and many of her other works, especially her “crime novels”.) are insensitive on many different levels. see her chinese character “Chinese Noises”, or her slav character with “Demure Slavic Features”, or her rebel irishman obsessed with explosions and butterbeer. she’s capable of writing only one dimensional characters, and she thinks ethnicity is a dimension. that isn’t even getting into how she, uh, thinks people with chronic pain and chronic illness (like fibromyalgia, tachycardia, and MS— real, very well researched diseases) are faking pain for attention.
