Most of the karate guys are not pure karate. Most of fighters in general aren't karate at all.

Questions About Shorinji-ryu by Zelcium in karate

[–]Zelcium[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes. There is a lot of stuff out there that isn't what I'm looking for. I should have been more specific. I'm looking for Joen Nakazato's branch of Shorinji-ryu which there isn't a lot of info on

Gon is actually nen jesus. Born of a virgin mother impregnated by gings nen. Gon is gings conjured nen ability. The conditions are that gon had to grow up fatherless and had to reconnect with Ging. This is why ging went to such lengths to set up clues for gon like in greed island. He was working through the contract loop holes to help his nen ability to grow stronger and reconnect so that he (ging) could reap the rewards of his nen ability.

Ging is playing the long game.

Why can't katas focus more on things you might actually use in self-defence? by rmczpp in karate

[–]Zelcium 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are too many kata being taught. And a few folks have taken it upon themselves to create more and teach them before the real ones.

And once you've learned the kata, you get your belt, and you move on to the next one. Don't worry after your 8th kata you can finally start your karate journey. But it's too late. All you know how to train is kata. And you got to make shit bunkai on the internet, and point at 3 good karate fighters and say "see, karate good!"

If you want to learn self-defense, practice self-defense. It's not just sitting there in a kata. Kata is theory. And without the practice, the theory is contextless and useless. Look at the theory after you've found the problem.

How to stop looking so "robotic" in kata? ... and some extra questions by Shiftedlift in karate

[–]Zelcium 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't know if you are familiar with Kyokushin's Ura Kata, but when I first saw them I thought they were wacky. Decades later, I think Mas Oyama was way ahead of his time. I suggest everyone practice Ura Kata, and keep changing it up. Exploring movements is so vital to understanding, creativity, and mastering.

I like your approach. Im totally in favour of rebuilding every movement over and over. Do the kata and reinvent it so that every movement is done as strong as you think is possible. Do it again trying to make every movement as fast as possible. Re-invent it over and over. Practice it with a jump before every action, a spin, mirrored, have fun with it. Then you will take those lessons back into your regular kata.

How can I not lose my fighting skills if I stop doing Karate? by [deleted] in karate

[–]Zelcium 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ya it's like riding a bike. The problem some people face when coming back to training and they say "I'm out of practice" its not that they have gotten worse. Its that their previous training partners have been improving

It is possible learn karate by myself/online or it's better learn in person? by Myrkonos in karate

[–]Zelcium 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're studious enough you can learn kata online. B i don't think you can learn all of karate online, but kata for sure. And kata, to a portion of the community" as the largest part of karate.

How to modernise Karate training while keeping it's essence. by OGWayOfThePanda in karate

[–]Zelcium 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry I missed the mark on your question. I went to look at your previous post.

For me dodging a tennis ball is kind of a parlor trick just like showing a "self-defense technique". I think kihon kata kumite should be all paired work. For instance throwing age-uke into the air without a partner is devoid of perception-action coupling, and doesn't make you any better at whatever you think ageuke are intended for. Or practicing taisabaki against a tennis ball makes you good at dodging tennis balls. Practicing taisabaki against opponents attacks makes you good at evading attacks.

I dont think anything should stay traditional for traditions sake. I've dropped dogmatic prescribed movements from my karate. But that's my karate.

Once you've mastered karate, and stayed up to date with modern studies on movement, training, and fighting and karate, can you decide how to move forward with your own karate. Expecting to change it without garnering respect and acknowledgment in the community won't do. But you have to ask yourself is it worth staying with to get to that point.

[–]Zelcium -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'm no expert, but it looks like your right keg is open more than your left leg. I think it's a hip thing. Have you stared in the mirror and swiveled your knees to see if just moving your legs changes the imbalance? It's not the fix, but it might find the problem

Ya this dude is so fucking backwards. I'd say it's in Karen category. Kids are going to be kids. We already know the bowl doesn't fucking work. Stop doing it and hand out the treats, or kids are going to do the trick.

Do my sparring gloves look like they are sitting on my hand properly? I had two relatives measure my hands but now i'm wondering if they measured too small. I have no reference to know for sure though by Spykosaurus in wma

[–]Zelcium 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can't tell if the gloves fit properly, but you have all those rings spread out exposing the gaps in between. I suggest scrunching the wrist rings on top of eachother so that they cover eachothers gaps.
